Sound Walls Along I-64 East to be Temporarily Removed for Widening
Work to begin as early as Monday, October 18
NORFOLK – Work to remove the existing sound walls and surrounding trees along I-64 eastbound in Norfolk will begin as early as Monday, October 18, 2021, as part of the roadway widening work for the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion (HRBT) Project.

Construction crews will begin work to remove the existing sound walls along I-64 east between Oastes Creek and W. Evans Street. Following the removal of the sound walls, crews will begin work to clear trees along the same area of the project. The sound wall and trees are being removed to prepare the area where I-64 eastbound will be widened from two to four travel lanes.

Once the new travel lanes are constructed, new sound walls will be installed and trees will be planted along this area of the project. The new sound wall is scheduled to be in place by late Summer 2022.

These construction activities will be conducted during daytime hours with minimal impact on residents living in the area or to motorists on I-64 and surrounding local roads.

Temporary lane closures, if needed, will be posted in the HRBT Expansion Project weekly lane closure report at HRBTExpansion.org.
