TERM 3 GRADES & CURRENT PROGRESS

If you can believe it, 3rd Term officially came to an end on March 24th before Spring Break! Any HS^2 and KMHS courses that were completed at the end of the 3rd term have now been transcripted within Infinite Campus.

This is the student's official transcript! As a reminder, only credits that are complete will show up on a student's transcript in Infinite Campus. Any credits that are still in progress can be found in myLC. Therefore, you may not see any final grades posted for term 3 depending on the individual student's goals/plan. Additionally, any HS^2 all-year-long courses will not have a grade transcripted until the end of the school year!

While we have quite a ways to go in the last term of the year, be on the lookout for Term 4 progress reports to come out on May 8th! Progress reports will be available in Infinite Campus, but also will be emailed home by the students. These reports will include both an in-progress grade, and a teacher comment for every class.

AP BIOLOGY STUDENTS STUDY BIOTECHNOLOGY

In Mr. Lui’s AP Biology class, students did a crime scene lab for their biotechnology unit. Students took DNA from a simulated crime scene and compared it to four potential suspects. To identify which suspects were at the crime scene, the students first isolated the DNA and placed it into a Microtest tube.

Then, the DNA was amplified using the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to denature, build, and anneal the DNA. Next, students dyed the DNA and put the 4 suspects' DNA and the DNA obtained from the crime scene into an agarose gel. The gel was the put into an electrophoresis tray used to separate the DNA. Finally, since the gel was clear, they used fast blast dye to turn it blue, making it easier to see the bands from the PCR products.

By comparing the DNA strands, the students determined that either suspect B or C was at the crime scene!

AP EXAMS & SPRING WORKSHOPS

AP Exams:

While some AP Courses have had portfolio projects, papers, and presentations that students have been submitting to the College Board throughout the school year, AP Exams are the culminating event of the course! AP Exams will occur over a two week time frame from May 1 to May 12. Specific exam times and locations will be released in the upcoming weeks. Meanwhile, students should be studying and preparing to submit any remaining portfolio components, as well as getting ready for their exam(s).

Spring Workshops:

After AP Exams are concluded, Spring Workshops will start on May 15 and will run until the end of the HS^2 school year on June 6th. While students are still required to attend their KMHS classes during Workshops (following the campus blue/gold schedule), many HS^2 classes might either be concluded or will offer flexibility of which block they sign up for. When a class is not meeting, students have agency to still sign up for extra course work time, sign up for extra time in a class that wouldn't normally meet on that particular day, or sign up for unique classes. Students will be signing up for Spring Workshops in the first part of May.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT ~ LISETTE R.

2021 HS^2 Graduate

What have you been up to since graduating High School?

Since finishing at HS^2 I have been enrolled in University and College in Brisbane, Australia. After graduating at the end of term one in my senior year at HS^2 I had a bit of time on my hands before University started down here, so I enjoyed my second semester finding a job and getting ready to move cities again. I am currently in the third and final year of my degree at the Queensland University of Technology where I study a Bachelor of Business with a Major in Marketing and Minors in both Fashion Communication and Public Relations. Here I live at Union College at UQ, it is like dorm living but much more of a community. This year I was selected to be an RA for my college and look after the First Year Residents. I have also been chosen to play basketball for my college for the past three years and will be coordinating the team this year, where I hope to lead us to another podium finish.

How did HS^2 prepare you for the future?

HS^2 helped me define my future. I had so many aspirations to be in the medical field but still wanted to incorporate business somewhere, HS^2 let me pursue an education that would help me in whatever field I ended up choosing.

The elevated education of the school is what helped me get into the 3rd best business school in Australia and excel there. It helped me balance my studying habits so I would not be left behind in the fast-paced and intense education that Australia strives for. The outreach programs also helped me understand the fields where I do and do not want to work in and narrowed my choices down, which I am so grateful for today.

Is there anything specific that you enjoyed about HS^2?

I loved the atmosphere that HS^2 had. By being a smaller community, it made studying and learning much more personalized and crucial when it came to needing help from others for exams or assignments, as everyone goes through mostly the same classes together so you can always have a study buddy. I also enjoyed how self-paced some of the classes were, the fact you could go as fast or slow as you like depending on your learning levels was something I cherished.

What advice would you give to current and future HS^2 students?

Cherish your time in high school. I know it is said so often that it goes by so quickly, but it truly does. Learn everything you can and pursue whatever makes you the happiest. Without doing that I never would have found the degree I have and love. Make friends along the way, they will be your biggest supporters and people for life. In school, grasp every opportunity that is given to you because every outreach experience shapes your future to be more narrowed into what you want.
