MISSED CONFERENCES?

We were excited to welcome students and families to meet in person this week on Tuesday, March 7 for our student-led advisory conferences! During conferences, we discussed plans for success, a updates on school progress, and discussions around graduation requirements and proposed courses for the 2023-24 school year.

If you happened to miss conferences but would still like to meet (face-to-face or virtually) please contact your student’s advisor through the “staff contact” link found at the bottom of this newsletter!

PROHEALTH CARE VIRTUAL CAREER EXPLORATION SERIES

March 15 – Healthcare Informatics

April 19 – Interventional Radiology

May 17 – Labor & Delivery

Registration is required. You will need to register for each date separately. The WebEx meeting link will be included in the confirmation email.

ENGINEERING CARDBOARD SHELTERS

The Engineering class tested their cardboard shelters last week! The shelters were made using a variety of different materials (fabric, bubble wrap, aluminum foil, etc.) all with the goal of providing insulation to the shelters. The goal was to create the most, if any, insulation for the cardboard shelters. Taking the shelters outside, they recorded data with two temperature sensors, one on the inside of the shelter, and one on the outside. One person from each team was placed in the shelter for 40-60 minutes to signify a heat source, so they could tell if the shelter kept the heat in. In the end, all shelters were insulated, but to different degrees.

MEET THE STUDENTS

REAGAN K. ~ SOPHOMORE

What has been your favorite class so far and why?

My favorite class so far has been Kinesiology taught by Mrs. Mau. I found it so interesting to learn about the body—for example, the movement of joints, injuries, and more. I also love the student atmosphere of the class. I would definitely recommend this as a class for others to take!

What are your future goals?

It has always been my dream to go to UW-Madison for college. In the future, although I’m unsure exactly what I want to do, I would like to work in a museum, probably as a curator or historian. I really enjoy learning about history and think that museums are a unique way to share experiences of the past and teach people about our history in an easily accessible manner.

What are some extracurricular activities you enjoy?

I am a part of the Cheer Team, Forensics, and Model UN. The Cheer Team goes to football, basketball, and sometimes hockey games. We also compete in competitions for non-tumble and cheer dance. This year our team made it to state! We placed 5th in non-tumble and 6th in cheer dance. I am one of the lead students for Forensics, where you pick a category and present a speech, series of poems, or an excerpt to an audience and get feedback from judges. You can even progress to state competitions. I also participate in Model UN, which is a simulation of the United Nations. Students act as delegates and represent a country. At conferences, students research a topic that is typically a current world issue, such as piracy or the refugee crisis, and then discuss it and form resolutions with students from other schools.

What do you like most about HS²?

I like that you get to know your classmates and teachers a lot better throughout High School and build relationships. The teachers also are there to hold you accountable.

Why did you choose to join HS²?

I chose HS^2 because you generally have the same teachers and classmates every year. There is no need for reintroductions and there is a strong sense of community.

PERFECT ACT SCORE!

HS^2 student Audra C. earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36.

Audra took the test as a Junior and recently received a letter from the ACT board. This is a tremendous achievement and is also incredibly rare. Only one-fourth of one percent of ACT test takers receives a perfect score.

We are so proud of Audra and her academic exceptionalism and can't wait to see what she does next!
