November 11, 2022

Well, we have officially started the second term of the 2022-23 school year! Term 1 was full of the beginnings of many of our outreach opportunities, our first round of progress reports for the year, as well as fun classes offered for Green Days! It is clear that this school year has started off strong and we hope that it continues that way!

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

All HS^2 students must complete a total of 2.0 credits of outreach by the time they graduate. Last week, the Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior classes attended an informational advisory session to learn about all of the unique outreach opportunities offered within HS^2. Each of the three rotations were led by student presenters who were able to speak about their outreach experiences and answer any questions. The presentation can be accessed via this link.

FAMILY COLLABORATION GROUP

Thanks to all the parents that have already joined the HS^2 Family Collaboration Group! If you missed it, earlier this year an HS^2 parent group was formed in order to increase communication and provide a feedback loop as we work towards continuous school improvement. The group meets monthly with a different focus area each month. So far this year, we have analyzed parent survey results, looked at standardized test results and growth, and discussed 22-23 school goals. Our next meeting is scheduled for December 1st from 6-7pm. Please complete this google form to be included in further communication and calendar invites.

DOUSMAN SCIENCE FAIR

HS^2 students are helping out with the Dousman Elementary Science Fair! This Wednesday, the 4th and 5th graders traveled to the High School Campus where they tried out different HS^2 student-led experiments (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) to jumpstart ideas for their own individual or collaborative science fair projects and also met with their High School mentors. Moving forward, the Dousman and HS^2 students will have Google Meet mentoring sessions to work on their projects and prepare for the science fair presentations in the High School Auditorium on March 15th, and the Dousman science fair on March 16th! We cannot wait to see what the students come up with!

WE'RE HOSTING A FOOD DRIVE!

HS^2 is starting a Food Drive and we would love for you to get involved and help us out! We would love to reach a goal of 3,000 items collectively as a school!

The Food Pantry will accept all donations that are not past date foods, but are looking specifically for the BIG 8 showed on the flyer.

You can drop off donations until November 22nd to the KMHS front office, send donations with your student(s), or drop donations directly off at 1301 Sentry Drive!

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DAY

In working towards our goal of developing as engaged citizens, HS^2 is hoping to start a new tradition: Community Engagement Day! Yesterday, the students had grade level advisories for the purpose of brainstorming ideas in order to get started on the planning!

So, what is Community Engagement Day exactly? The first Community Day will be on Wednesday, December 21st, which is the last day before winter break. As a school, the entirety of HS^2 will be participating in community events whether its volunteering at a shelter, making or collecting items to donate, helping out at the elementary and middle schools, or planning a drive or other event. The purpose of this is for students have an opportunity to be engaged citizens within the community both inside and outside of HS^2, which is a disposition on KM’s Graduate Profile!

To make this day be as successful as possible, we might need some outside help! If any non-students are interested in driving or chaperoning for this day, or have any volunteer ideas or connections within the community, please contact HS^2 Director Mrs. Ladsten at ladstenr@kmsd.edu.
