Glycemic Management and Adverse Drug Events (ADEs)

An ADE is an injury resulting from a medical intervention related to a drug.1 ADEs are among the most preventable causes of death in hospitals, and ADEs involving hypoglycemic agents comprise 57 percent of all ADEs, making this the largest drug class contributing to ADE-related harms.2

Risk factors for hypoglycemia during hospitalization include:

  • Age.
  • Comorbidities.
  • Diabetes.
  • History of hypoglycemia.
  • Body mass index.
  • Hyperglycemia therapies.
  • Inadequate glucose monitoring.
  • Unclear physician orders.
  • Staffing shortages.
  • Limited facilities/beds.
  • Prolonged fasting.
  • Nutritional intake combined with therapy.3

Hypoglycemia during hospitalization, or secondary hypoglycemia, is associated with increased mortality, cardiovascular disorders, cerebrovascular disorders, and increased cost of care and length of stay.3 Consider using the tools found in The Flash section to prevent and treat hypoglycemic ADEs in your facility.

Glycemic Management Rates

Data show improvement in glycemic management for ADEs (lower rates are better).

Visit the HSAG HQIC Quality Improvement and Innovation Portal (QIIP) to view your data by selecting the Measure category of Adverse Drug Events and the Measure of ADE Diabetic Agent.

Rates are per 1,000 admissions. For additional details on measure specifications, please reference the HSAG HQIC Compendium of Measures. The baseline time period is 01/01/201912/31/2019. The current time period is 08/01/202207/31/2023.

Critical Communication

U.S. Nursing Shortage

There is increased demand for healthcare, and the American Nurses Association (ANA) estimates that the U.S. needs more than one million new nurses in the next few years to prevent a critical nursing shortage. Reasons for the shortage include an aging workforce; retiring nurses; turnover; and lack of faculty, education space, and resources to train new nurses.4 The resources below address some of these issues:
