Vehicle Safety Tips For Your Pets
Recently a dog came into the care of HSLM suffering from a very serious injury caused by a vehicle. This story is unique as the injury did not occur outside of the vehicle, but within it.

When being taken for a car ride with their owner, the car door had been accidently closed with the end of the dog's leash dangling outside; it ended up getting wrapped around a tire when the vehicle began moving. The leash was attached to the dog's collar within the vehicle, and pulled the dog into the side of the car door with such force that the dog's leg was severely broken. Unable to cover the substantial veterinary expenses, the dog's owner made the decision to surrender the dog to HSLM so that it could receive the care in which it required.

This unfortunate accident has compelled us to share important vehicle safety tips for your pets:

  1. Never allow your pet to sit in the front passenger seat or on your lap. This poses serious risk of injury in the case of an accident; especially if the airbags are deployed.
  2. Always ensure that your pet is safely secured in your vehicle by placing them in a hard-sided kennel or a dog seat/booster seat. Alternatively, you can clip their harness to a seatbelt device or thread your vehicle's existing seatbelt through a dog safety harness. Safety clips and seatbelts should never be attached to a dog's collar - a sudden stop or accident can cause the dog to choke. Always secure them by their harness.
  3. Always remove your dog's leash from their collar or harness while travelling in the car. This prevents the risk of the leash becoming stuck in the door or tangled around their body.
  4. Keep your windows partially or fully closed when driving with your pet, as they may jump out of the open window causing serious physical injury. This also helps to prevent your dog from sticking their head out of the window which is not good for their eyes- it dries them out and also exposes them to flying debris.
  5. Last but certainly not least - NEVER leave your pet unattended in a vehicle in the summer months as this can have life-threatening consequences.

Happy Adoption Update: Mason

"We adopted Mason in early February. He was very timid and elusive when he first came home, but after a while he slowly began to explore his surroundings and interact with us. Fast forward to now and he has blended into our family perfectly. He is extremely curious, playful and affectionate.
