HSLM Whiskers at Work Program

While most cats enjoy living in a home, there are certain felines who are surrendered to HSLM that are not suited for this type of lifestyle. To combat long stays in the shelter and to provide enrichment for these hard-working felines the HSLM Whiskers at Work Program was established.

HSLM Whiskers at Work cats are looking for employment, shelter, and care! These felines are pest control experts for barns and workshops.

These cats range in temperament from feral to friendly, preferring the freedom and independence which consists of indoor/outdoor living arrangements. These tenacious felines are curious and are looking to enjoy the world beyond the shelter.

Since the development of the Whiskers at Work program, we have had great success finding happy working homes for these felines. Sharon welcomed four cats into her barn through the program, this is her experience:

"Back in November, we picked up 4 (four) Whiskers at Work cats for our sheep farm. I wanted to touch base and let you know how pleased we are with the cats the HSLM staff selected for us.

All four are doing great. We left them in their crates in the old granary upstairs in the barn for the first night, then the following morning let them out one at a time until they were accustomed to receiving their food and water there.

Archie; the big black and white male that came with a warning on the carrier is the most “chill” of the bunch. He adjusted to the barn-like he’d been there his whole life. The others are more skittish and we only see them at chore time. In their defense, 300 ewes bawling for a feed at chore time is an assault on the ears of those of us who are used to the noise. The cats are becoming more and more comfortable as the days pass and are usually all out of their hiding places amongst the hay and straw bales to eat their breakfast and dinner by the time I’m finished chores.

We haven’t seen a mouse in the barn in a couple of weeks and even the pair of pigeons that had been nesting on one of the beams for the past year has decided it was time to move on.

Whiskers at Work is a great program. I wish I had been aware of it sooner."

All HSLM Whiskers at Work cats are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped prior to adoption.

Milo Adoption Update

"Milo is settled in very well now! He knows the routine and is more comfortable with us and has shown us his personality. At first, we had to hand feed him and he would only take food from our daughter. Now he is happy to share green beans, sweet potato, and almonds with us. He keeps a close watch over the kids at all times and always wants to be part of their pack. We are so happy he is part of our home."
