Shira is a stunning 7-month-old Snow Bengal mix who was recently surrendered to HSLM by her previous owner due to an extensive injury that was going to be very costly to treat. Although the exact cause of her injured leg is unknown (as it occurred while she was unattended outdoors) she was suffering from two serious puncture wounds to her right, front leg. This injury had led to a severe infection which was causing Shira's overall health to rapidly decline; she had become lethargic and lost all interest in eating.

Shira's unfortunate injury is a perfect reminder of why we always encourage cat owners to not allow their felines outdoors unless secured via leash or carrier. Injury, as well as the risk of illness, theft, unplanned breeding (if unspayed/unneutered), or even death, can all be unfortunate consequences that occur when cats are allowed to roam outdoors.
Due to the severity of Shira's injury and infection (which was seeming to be resistant to antibiotics), and the likelihood of dead tissue beneath the wounds, it was determined by the examining veterinarian and HSLM Animal Health Team that the best course of action would be to amputate the leg.

Since her surgery, Shira has been recovering in the care of HSLM and doing very well!
The care that Shira was provided was all thanks to our incredible donors! We do not receive government funding, and rely solely on the financial support of our community members in order to provide veterinary care, nutrition and shelter to thousands of pets, each year!

HSLM Rocked the Park thanks to our volunteers!
HSLM was one of three charities involved with the Start.ca Rock the Park event which took place July 13-17 at Harris Park. Thanks to the hard work of 100+ volunteers who sold and distributed drinks, HSLM will be receiving a portion of the proceeds raised through the event. These funds will be put towards the New Home. New Hope. capital campaign to build the Old Oak Animal Campus.
