Welcome back!
FROM THE PTA PRESIDENT

Dear Parents,

At our last PTA meeting, we voted to allocate PTA funds to help support afterschool clubs that were not meeting consistently due to a budget shortfall. The funds will help pay teachers who stay after the last bell rings in order to supervise and guide students in these clubs. Thank you for your patience as we went through the necessary steps to secure this funding. Our next PTA meeting will be Thursday, November 14 from 6:30-8:30 pm in NAC-201.

It was fun meeting freshman and sophomore parents on October 29th and junior parents on November 4th at our inaugural parent mixers . One of our goals at the PTA is helping parents build relationships with other parents. It was great to watch you exchange stories and phone numbers, and I enjoyed answering a lot of very good questions you had about all sorts of HSMSE-related topics.

Another goal of the PTA is to help provide funds and resources to help build our HSMSE community. We are currently fundraising to help a shortfall in grant money for our Wellness Center . Last year, the Wellness Center provided FREE targeted services to 35 students who were in need of crisis intervention, treatment, intake, or referrals to other sources. Over 500 students received selective or universal services via workshops, groups, or presentations. We need to raise $25,000 to keep the Wellness Center running, so please go to https://hsmse.org/students/wellness-support/#_1397 and when you make your donation, please specify “Wellness Center.”

Regards,
Ken Katzman
PTA President

THANK YOU, OPEN HOUSE VOLUNTEERS!
The HSMSE community hosted several thousand visitors on the wettest afternoon and evening in recent memory. Thanks to the teachers, parents, and students who worked through torrential rain to welcome prospective students and their parents. Special thanks to Ms. Kasi, Ms. Hudson, Mr. Dolcy, and Ms. Pecorari, who worked so hard to rearrange the open house to keep people out of the rain as much as possible. The students were heroic, escorting visitors through the downpour. Several prospective parents told us how impressed they were with the HSMSE students: if they were willing to host visitors so graciously on such a wet night, this must be a special school. It was a challenging night, and we're so proud of our students, faculty, and PTA.
FARMING AND FOOD, ON CAMPUS AND BEYOND
Over twenty HSMSE students attended the Garden Club's 3rd annual salsa event at the CCNY Roofpod Garden. Students harvested chilis, tomatoes and tomatillos from the garden and with the help of a few onions*, avocados, cilantro and an army of limes, they made some kickin' salsa!

*All onion tears were tears of joy.
Students in Ms. Boylan's Gastronomy elective took a field trip to Stone Barns. They spent the day at the farm learning about the Center’s methods of raising livestock and growing vegetables sustainably. By walking through their fields, grazing pastures and greenhouse, students gained insight about what agroecological farming means, and why good food, grown well, can change our food system. The kids then prepared a menu of polenta with pumpkin sauce, sauteed vegetables, and apple crumble.
THE ONE RUN
Thanks to everyone who joined us at the 3rd annual The One Run to raise money for HSMSE and other participating public schools on Sunday, October 20th. Runners and walkers spent a wonderful morning moving at various speeds along the river. There were prizes for the fastest runners in each age group and for the most successful fundraisers, along with custard provided by Shake Shack (one of the event sponsors). Registration for the race filled, and we exceeded last year's fundraising by more than $1000.
Thanks to everyone who participated, and especially to Diane Hoffman and Ted Hausman for working to organize the event.
PARENT MIXERS
In the last week we hosted two inaugural community-building events. Last week was our lively Freshman/Sophomore parent mixer where we hosted over 60 parents for wonderful food, drinks, and conversation. On Monday, we held a similar event just for Junior parents to swap stories and advice for managing the junior year juggle, all over a delicious Peruvian meal.
We hope these events will inspire more families to get involved in our vibrant and special community.
HSMSE SPORTS NEWS
Flying Dragons
The cross country team has had an excellent season, with a dozen races and many running-related activities. We kicked off our August practices with our annual alumni vs. varsity frisbee game and held a special practice and picnic on Governors Island. Fourteen freshmen were welcomed into the Flying Dragon family.
Races began in mid-September against Manhattan teams where we competed ably against the likes of Stuyvesant, Hunter, and Beacon high schools. In our first city-wide competition we did very well, with the boys varsity team finishing 1st, and the girls finishing 6th, out of 25 teams. We made a special trip to a meet in Suffolk County where the freshmen boys came in first on an unfamiliar course at Sunken Meadow State Park. In recent days the Manhattan Championships were held, where our boys Varsity team came in 2nd place and secured for the team a berth at the upcoming City Championships. JV boys also came in 2nd in Manhattan, and in the sophomore races boys & girls teams came in 3rd and freshman boys came in 2nd in the borough out of 19 schools.
As we do every year, the team weaves our enthusiasm for the sport into our families and the New York running community. We did volunteer trail maintenance in Van Cortlandt Park where we train and race, and supported marathoners at the Mile 24 water station this past weekend. Also, we held a family picnic in September and participated in the PTA One Run with parents, siblings, and classmates. You can see some our season’s highlights at  https://adobe.ly/2CaSNXz
Boys Soccer
The boys' soccer team made the playoffs during their first season in the Manhattan A division, finishing with a 6-6 record in league play. Despite their first round exit in the playoffs, the team exceeded expectations all around, establishing a legacy for future boys' soccer teams at HSMSE.

CHESS AT HSMSE
Fall 2019 meetings of the HSMSE Chess Club have begun!

The club meets Friday afternoons in C1. All are welcome.

Can you tell us a bit about what you've been doing since HSMSE?
HSMSE was 4 years of me testing my passion for architecture. I really enjoyed learning Autodesk Inventor and later Autodesk Revit. I knew after HSMSE that I wanted to pursue architecture and design, so I went to an accredited college, Hampton University. Hampton University is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), which is a college that is predominately of African descent. This was a rare experience for me as a New Yorker: being surrounded by people who looked like me helped me find out about the person I am aside from my appearance.
After I graduated with a Masters of Architecture from Hampton University, I went to graduate school at the University of Miami to study Urban Design. Urban Design is the design of the built environment that the general public uses. It’s the careful design of streets, blocks, parks, plazas, etc.
I view Architecture and Urban Design as the same work, just at different scales. The former, the building scale, the latter the scale of the city.
I’ve been working full-time in Norfolk, VA with Work Program Architects as an Architectural and Urban Designer for the past 3 years. Our firm holds the Urban Design contract for 2 cities as well as an Architectural contract with another HBCU, Norfolk State University.

Tammi Hawa '13 attended the University of Toronto, where she studied industrial engineering. She chose the U of T for its phenomenal engineering program and its big-city location. She also appreciated the university's international vibe and student body--her closest friends were from Jordan, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ottawa. Because industrial engineering is a small program, she had the benefits of having a small cohort within a very large university. Her program was rigorous, requiring five to six courses a semester, and she spent a lot of time studying and learning with her friends. She also worked for You're Next Career Network , a student organization focused on bringing companies and career opportunities to campus and to engineering students.
During her undergraduate years, Tammi took advantage of several programs that gave her interesting and varied work experiences. She spent a summer working in Tel Aviv at an internet marketing start up (through the Onward Israel program ), where she enjoyed the experience of working in a different culture and the nearby beach. It's common for U of T engineering students to take a co-op year between their third and fourth years of university. During her co-op year, Tammi spent fourteen months working as a process analyst for a large bank on Toronto's Bay Street.
Tammi's experience during her co-op year helped her decide to change focus, and pursue a master's of applied science in healthcare engineering , applying operations research to the healthcare industry. She's working on ways to improve inventory management, especially of surgical supplies. She enjoys knowing that her research can have real impact on healthcare, and honing her technical and critical thinking skills. She also enjoys having a great deal of autonomy, though she sometimes misses having larger teams of people around her, as she liked the collaborative environment of her undergraduate program.
