Just over 350 students participated last week across four performances at the annual Oaklawn Visual & Performing Arts Magnet School Spring Dance Recital. Under the leadership of OVPA Dance Coordinar Ms. Katie Yates, kindergarten - fourth dance students chose a genre and worked alongside classmates from February-April to practice and prepare for the memorable performance. Students at OVPA have the option to take dance classes as electives throughout their tenure, and can also be part of the OVPA Dance Company. Performances included a morning and evening show on Tuesday and Thursday, last week. See more.

As part of our district-wide participation in Global Youth Service Day, 9th-12th grade math students in Mrs. Gray’s math class created colorful cards decorated in geometric shapes and patterns for patients at St. Vincent Hospital in Hot Springs. Each card included a handwritten message of encouragement from students. See more, here.
For their contribution to Global Youth Service Day, our amazing JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) students at the Junior Academy chose various locations in the Hot Springs community to serve including: Brookfield, West Shores, downtown Hot Springs, and The Caring Place.Groups developed their own goals, shopping lists, and agendas necessary to complete service projects at each unique spot. JAG Coordinator Mrs. Goodman points out that students not only put thoughtful time into planning projects, but that she receives excellent compliments from staff members at each location regarding their manners and kindness, and their thorough job of cleaning up after themselves. Our #HSSD students are welcome back to all facilities at anytime. See more, here.
Third Grade Students Create Water Color Paintings for Area Nursing Homes

Mrs. Carter read to the students "Now One Foot, Now the Other," by Tomie DePaola, which is the story of a grandson who helps his father recover from a debilitating stroke. The Class discussed the importance of having relationships with grandparents and other elderly members of the community.
