Miss UAPB and HSSD Alumna Angelica Perkins Honored by HSSD School Board
Miss UAPB and HSSD Alumna Angelica Perkins was honored at the monthly HSSD School Board meeting for the many high honors she has earned since her tenure at the district. “All of these honors and achievements are because of you ... it takes a village to raise a child. I’m so grateful to all of you” she said.
In honor of Arkansas Educator Commitment Signing Week, April 14-20, 2019, we highlight the outstanding work of our students in the Orientation to Teaching class at our Hot Springs World Class High School. The week is dedicated to promoting and celebrating those who have committed to the teaching profession across the state. High school students in Orientation to Teaching with Ms. Sarah Graham have spent the year working within curriculum and material equivalent to what they will see in the first two years of a bachelor’s degree program in education. During their second semester, students served as teacher interns to classrooms at Park Magnet and the Intermediate School. They agree that their hands-on experiences there were most valuable in helping to determine if education is the right field choice for them. The Orientation to Teaching class is part of offerings within our Career Academies at the HSWCHS, which is dedicated to making our students as career-ready as possible for whatever paths they choose after graduation.
Shawn Lingo Celebrated during Signing Ceremony for Baseball Scholarship
Congrats to HSSD Senior Shawn Lingo - celebrated last week during a Signing Ceremony at our Hot Springs World Class High School for accepting a scholarship to play baseball and attend National Park College in Hot Springs. Shawn plays the position of catcher on our Trojans Baseball Team. We are so proud for you and your family!
6 th Grade Students "Spread the Joy" with T-Shirts, Origami, and More
For Youth Service Day, our  Intermediate School  6th grade students created messages of affirmation via tie dye t-shirts, decorated eggs, origami artwork, and bracelets. They distributed these to students on Friday afternoon to "Spread the Joy," which was the name of the project.
O aklawn Magnet School Second Grade Hosts Successful Food Drive
For Youth Service Day, our Oaklawn Magnet School 2nd grade students and families collected 1,079 items of non perishable food to support the Jr. Beta Club's Blessings Box (located at the HSSD District Admin Office at 400 Linwood Avenue). Last week across the district the HSSD completed youth service projects like this for Global Youth Service Day.
HSWCHS Students Attend Global Youth Service Day Event at Clinton Center and Arkansas Food Bank
Hot Springs World Class High School Gifted/Talented students attended Global Youth Service Day at the Clinton Center and Arkansas Food Bank. Each year the Clinton Foundation celebrates Global Youth Service Day with a special service-learning program and “Day of Action” opportunity for Arkansas high school juniors and seniors. Students listened to guest speaker Phiwi, a 20 year old from Zimbabwe, about her work to establish a mentoring program called "Girl Power" that helps young girls in her rural village attend school. Next, they volunteered at the Arkansas Food Bank, packing potatoes for distribution to Arkansas families in need.
Gardner Math Club Conducts Needs Assessment with Teachers to Prioritize Service Projects
The Gardner STEM Math Club conducted a Needs Assessment, by walking the campus and interviewing staff members about what kind of projects could be most helpful for Youth Service Day.

Based on the Needs Assessment the they chose the following projects to complete for Youth Service Day:

  • Help kindergarten teachers by teaching small groups of students to tie shoes.
  • Help Mrs. Perkins, in the computer lab, by untangling headphones.
  • Help our custodians by cleaning marks of walls, and cleaning windows.
  • Make Anti-bullying posters for the walls.
  • Clean up litter from around the campus.
  • Pick up tree limbs and branches from playground.
  • Encourage others to clean up after themselves in the cafeteria.
  • Tell the cafeteria workers thank you for making them lunch.
Gardner Kindergarten Takes out the Trash, across the School
Gardner STEM Magnet School Kindergarten staff and students took part in National Youth Service Day by going throughout the entire building to pull trash, change trash bags, and flush the toilets before we all went home for the weekend
Gardner Students Host Library Cleanups
Mrs. Huffman and Ms. Sierocuk’s classes assisted with library cleanups and book organization following almost a full school year of classes and book exchanges by students in and out of Gardner libraries.
This week’s shoutout goes to the innovative art programs and amazingly talented artistic students that we have across the HSSD - all showcased at a WONDERFUL Hearts on Fire for the Arts event last night at the Hot Springs Mall. Congratulations and thank you to the unbelievable student performances from all schools, and to the artists who had artwork featured from across classes and genres. I would like to specifically highlight an awesome story that I had the personal pleasure of hearing this week, from a Langston student at our Intermediate School, Brandon Cazalez. I also want to share anonymous shoutouts to our 7th-8th grade Trojan Baseball Team, and to Mrs. Deardorff and district arts staff for their dedicated effort. See more, here.
