Trojan News
The HSJA JAG (Jobs for Arkansas Graduates) Program has received a $500 Walmart Community Grant to help support 7th-8th grade JAG students in community service endeavors and student initiatives within the district. Thank you to Walmart Store 261, which is the Walmart Supercenter on Central Avenue in Hot Springs. JAG students are working during the spring semester to plan a ceremony for students who have completed the program, and to complete service learning projects in the Hot Springs area at nursing homes, homeless shelters, blood donation centers, and other non-profit organizations. JAG students are also beginning a campaign of reading to elementary classes throughout the HSSD. See more.
The Hot Springs Emblem Club generously donated books to each first grade student at our #HSSD Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School. Club members hand-delivered more than 140 books to each classroom as part of a literacy initiative to promote reading and reading skills across Garland County. Retired OVPA teacher Mrs. Gail McKee abd Emblem Club President Bev Goodridge were among Emblem Club volunteers who made the deliveries. See more, here.
H SWCHS and Chartwells Continue to Add World Class Food Options to the Cafeteria
Our dining services provider at Chartwells hosted another Student Choice Sampling event last week, where students chose Bok Choy as an additional food station in the Hot Springs World Class High School Cafeteria. Students sampled stations including "Flame" - a mushroom swiss burger; "Bok Choy" - a Szechuan chicken dish; and "Roost" - a chicken club sandwich. Thank you to cafeteria staff and the whole team at Chartwells for providing the very best to our students!
You know that game you play with your kids that they want repeated over and over again? Langston kindergarten students with Mrs. Bledsoe use the sentence scramble to build reading skills, and to practice problem solving and teamwork. Read more, here. See more, here.
This week’s shoutout goes to our 7th-12th grade students and support staff/sponsors in our HSSD Secondary Theatre Program for their excellent production of “Footloose!” Your theatrical talent, months of hard work in rehearsals and preparation, and wonderful collaboration as a student team was evident during every part of the “Footloose!” performance. Thank you for doing such a beautiful job of recreating the joy and excitement from the original movie right here in Hot Springs. I also want to share an anonymous shout to Mrs. Sadler at our HSJA. “ ... Mrs. Sadler strives to create a positive work environment during our meetings and also makes herself available during the workday." See more, here.
