L angston Students Receive Smokey Bear Birthday Cake
Smokey Bear turned 75 this year, and partners at the Arkansas Forestry Commission hosted a video contest for classes across Arkansas to send birthday messages to celebrate. Langston Magnet School students in Mrs. Bledsoe’s class (kindergarten) and Mrs. Short’s class (third grade) won the contest in this district for their memorable videos. Smokey and AFC representatives made a guest appearance last week and treated Langston students to tasty birthday cake!
Jacoby Weston to Represent HSSD at YLS and AMUN!
Our Jacoby Weston will represent the HSSD at two prestigious programs this summer: Young Leaders Summit at the University of Chicago and Arkansas Model United Nations program at the University of Central Arkansas. The YLS is a college empowerment conference for a diverse cohort of high school juniors, selected through a competitive application process. He is among only 200 applicants from 43 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico to be selected. The AMUN is an experiential learning activity with the primary goal of providing high school students with a unique opportunity to enhance their communication skills, improve their critical thinking skills, and increase their understanding of diplomacy and international politics.
We look forward to hosting HSSD Community Dance Camp July 8-11. Camp is open to any students, ages 4+. Mrs. Bramlett Turner coordinates for instruction from local and abroad guest teachers to teach ballet, jazz, modern dance, and tap! All participants receive the official dance camp shirt and perform in an informal performance on July 11. Find details and registration info, here.
The HSSD will host summer Pee Wee Camps for students entering 1st-6th grade for the following athletic activities: Soccer (July 8-10), Cheer/Dance (May 28-30), Football (May 28-30), Volleyball (May 28-30), Baseball/Softball (May 21-23), and Basketball (July 22 - 24). HSWCHS EAST Facilitator John Stokes received the 2019 Teacher of the Year Award from the Air Force Association’s Arkansas State Association, at the chapter level (AF270 Chapter, which includes Garland County) and the state level. A Teacher of the Year award recipient is chosen by members based on “demonstrated excellence in education in the spirit of Christa McAuliffe, and in recognition of sustained, outstanding performance as an educator and unequalled dedication to ensuring that America’s students are prepared for aerospace technological challenges of the future.” Learn more, here.
Congrats to our HSJA JAG Specialist Mrs. Goodman on earning her Lead Professional Educator license. The lead professional educator license is available to educators who aspire to leadership roles, while continuing classroom work. Three years of teaching and a show of classroom effectiveness are prerequisites to applying for professional educator licensure, along with demonstrating competency in leadership. Learn more, here.
Graduation ceremonies are such a special part of our jobs as educators. Whether you were part of the graduation for our outstanding senior class on Friday night, or are part of our precious kindergarten commencement ceremonies from each of our elementary schools, you are part of moving our kids on to another step in their growth and academic journey. The term “Graduate” comes from the Latin term "Gradus,” which actually means a “step.” This week’s shoutout goes to all of our #HSSD Graduates - of all ages! Here’s to you - Class of 2031 AND Class of 2019. This week’s shout out also goes to our staff members involved with any one of our graduation or awards ceremonies. Thank you for working so hard to help us honor and celebrate our kids in every way possible. Trojan ‘Good Things’ is a weekly shout out from #HSSD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Nehus to individuals in our school community who are doing amazing things! See more, here.
