English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Programs are available at all public schools in Arkansas, and HSSD is committed to maintaining ESOL resources and assistance of the highest caliber to students and families. Student diversity is one of the most important pieces of the identity and culture at HSSD. We are proudly providing an educational foundation to the most diverse student population in Garland County, where 11 languages are spoken among HSSD families. Learn more about the professional facilitators, specialized resources and tools, outreach events, and opportunities available to our HSSD families who are experiencing a language transition. HSSD elementary schools are ready for Read Across America Week! Join in on the fun - Find a full schedule of books and attire for each day of the week, here. The National Education Association’s Read Across America initiative is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading. Our wonderful school media specialists at each HSSD school organize the week-long celebration ahead of March 2nd to celebrate reading and the many ways we promote and support literacy for our students at the HSSD. Learn more, here.
Young actors with the HSSD Thespians group attended the 2019 Arkansas State Thespian Festival at Russellville High School earlier this month. The Thespian Festival is a chance for young actors to come together and compete against other students from all over the state. #HSSD students attended workshops about overcoming performance anxiety, building a character in a song, acting a song, stage combat, tap dance, broadway dancing, and more. Mrs. Lauren McClendon says - "They had the wonderful opportunity to feel the positive energy of other performers!" Find a full photo album, here.
This week’s shout out goes to our wonderful HSSD Counselors, who work at each of our schools to ensure the academic goals, social/personal development, and even career development opportunities are identified and met by students. We deeply appreciate all that you do: Denise Ludlow, Angela Millard, Cheryl Stafford, Jerry Scroggins, Renee Tester, Leslie Whalen, Katelyn Walker, Amy Snider, Brittany George, and Dawn Anderson. You all truly help to make HSSD “A Place for Everyone.” I also want to share a shout out from a guest from the EAST Initiative Phase Training Team, who recently visited our HSJA EAST Classroom and had glowing remarks.
