HSSD Beta Clubs Qualify for National Competition

Arkansas Jr. and Sr. Beta clubs gathered for State Convention January 24 - 26, 2019. A group of 94 HSSD students in 4th - 8th grades competed as Jr. Beta Club members from OVPA, Park Magnet, Intermediate School, and Junior Academy at Arkansas Junior Beta Club Convention January 24-25. A group of 25 HSSD students in 9th-12th grades competed as Sr. Beta Club members from HSWCHS at Senior Beta Club Convention January 25-26. Both events were hosted at the Hot Springs Convention Center. In all, 50 HSSD students qualified (42 from Jr. Beta Club and 8 from Sr. Beta Club) to compete at National Beta Convention in June, to be hosted in Oklahoma City. HSJA EAST Receives Grants for Student Projects

The Hot Springs Junior Academy EAST Program has received two grants to help support student-led projects including an active chicken coop and egg production operation, along with the ability to create quality documentaries - including an Arkansas Game and Fish Wildlife Conservation Education Grant and an Online Media Production Tools Grant via Arkansas Department of Education. Park Magnet Students Join Classrooms Across the Globe for World Read Aloud Day

Park Magnet students participated in World Real Aloud Day, joining people around the globe to share stories and advocate for literacy. Park Library Media Specialist Mrs. Evans arranged for Skype connections with five different locations for K-5 students, including a public library in Guernsey, England. See full story, here.

HSJA EAST Receives Two Grants to Fund Student Led Projects

Our HSJA EAST Program has received 2 grants to help support student-led projects including an active chicken coop and egg production operation along with the ability to create quality documentaries. Grants were graciously provided through the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Conservation Education Grant Program and the Online Media Production Tools Grant Program through the Arkansas Department of Education and Ozarks Unlimited Resource Educational Service Cooperative.

Langston Food Drive Provides Donations to Jackson House

Langston families have graciously donated some 650 canned food items to donate to the Hot Springs Jackson House, during a January food drive. As part of the effort, Langston students also decorated Valentine’s Day lunch bags, which will be used by Jackson House staff members to sack food items on Valentine’s Day and spread a little “love” to those receiving lunches. The Jackson House serves the Hot Springs community as a homeless shelter, food pantry, and crisis intervention center. The Langston Health & Wellness Committee chose a food drive as the January community service project to challenge students at the very beginning of the new year to value the service and care of others. Trojan Good Things, 2/1

This week’s shout out goes to all staff members who have worked to make Summit Learning a successful learning platform for our students. Especially at the Junior Academy, I know you’ve all worked extremely hard with our students and our parents to help everyone become familiar with using Summit in the classroom and to monitor student progress, and hopefully - most importantly - engage in a way that enhances student learning.
