Round Rock Express Baseball Contributes To Willie Wells Memorial Scholarship
The Round Rock Express Baseball Team recently celebrated one of the greatest players in the history of professional baseball and a Texas Negro League team while contributing to Huston-Tillotson University.
The team contributed $10,000 to the Willie Wells Memorial Scholarship at Huston-Tillotson University. Wells briefly attended Samuel Huston College before beginning his professional career.
HT Athletic Director Dr. Monique Carroll (center) accepted the check with Round Rock Baseball General Manager Tim Jackson (left) and Team President Chris Almendarez (right). The Willie Wells Memorial Scholarship will be awarded prior to the Fall of 2022 semester.
Wells played as a shortstop from 1924-48 in a Hall Of Fame career that saw him play in the Negro Leagues, Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
The Austin-born Wells spent part of his career with the Austin Black Senators. The Express wore replica jerseys in last Saturday's game
