Austin Celebrates Life And Legacy Of Dr. King
As the City of Austin honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a virtual event Monday, Huston-Tillotson University student leaders were featured during the celebration.
HT Student Government Association President Derrick Jackson Jr., Miss HT Michela Walker, and Mister HT Christian Broussard each participated in the program. Additionally, University President Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette and University Chaplain Rev. Donald Brewington brought remarks as Dr. King was remembered on what would have been his 92nd birthday on Jan. 15.

Clemmons Named Student Of The Year Nominee By DivInc
Congratulations to Huston-Tillotson University's Jeffrey Clemmons, a member of the #GeniusGeneration who is a Student of The Year nominee as selected by DivInc Champions of Change Awards.
A senior political science major from Lancaster, Texas, Jeffrey serves as President of HT's NAACP student chapter, Chief Justice in Student Government, and a Student Leader with Texas Rising.
Off-campus, Jeffrey is the Chair of the Austin College Student Commission, representing his peers at HT and the 100,000 students across five universities in Austin. He is also an HBCU Ambassador with the Andrew Goodman Foundation, and previously served as our university's White House Competitiveness Scholar in 2020 alongside 43 other HBCU scholars from across the country.
The Student of the Year winner will be announced during the Celebrating Trailblazers in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Austin on Thursday, March 3 at Fair Market.

President Burnette Named Austinite Of The Year
Huston-Tillotson University President Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette was named as the Austin Chamber of Commerce Austinite Of The Year for her work in accelerating and expanding the city's only HBCU as well as her citywide civic leadership, including crucial service as co-chair for the Mayor's Task Force on Institutional Racism and Systemic Inequities.

Banner Year For International Student Enrollment At HT
International students appear to transition smoothly into the Huston-Tillotson University and Austin environments. Computer Science major Zainab Khan from Pakistan said Austin’s very diverse community makes it easy to fit in.
"There is so much to experience here at HT and in Austin,” Khan said. “I am enjoying the educational environment, meeting new people from all parts of the globe, and relishing in the local and international food scene. There is just so much to add to one’s life experience."

16th E.T. Dixon Lecture Set For January 27
The Huston-Tillotson University Center for Religious Life Campus Ministry will present the 16th Annual Bishop E. T. Dixon Lecture on Thursday, January 27 at 2 p.m.
This year’s lecture, titled “It’s A Conversation; Why Is Scripture Still Relevant After 2,500 Years?”, will be presented virtually via zoom (log-in information in graphic).
The speakers are Dr. James Kraft, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Huston-Tillotson University, and Dr. Herbert Marbury, Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near East, Vanderbilt School of Divinity.
Dixon, for which the lecture is named, is one of two HT graduates to receive “bishop” status. He graduated magna cum laude from what was Samuel Huston College in 1943 before earning a degree from Drew Theological Seminary. He served the church and community in numerous positions while establishing innovative programs before and after becoming president of Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas. He retired in 1992 and died in 1996. Huston-Tillotson is affiliated with The United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and offers a minor in religious studies.

Cassanova Named Assistant Vice President, Administration and Finance
Dawn Cassanova has been named Assistant Vice President of Administration and Finance at Huston-Tillotson University, President Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette announced.
A native of Clarendon, Jamaica, Cassanova will now serve as the University’s principal budget officer, responsible for managing and completing complex financial planning and analyses. She will also work closely with senior University management, including the Chief Financial Officer, Vice Presidents, University Deans, and provide key finance team management.
A member of the staff since 2009, Cassanova joined HT as a financial analyst and budget analyst in the Office of Administration and Finance. She later added duties as the Post-Award Specialist and Financial Project Analyst in the Office of Sponsored Programs and Office of the Provost.
Cassanova earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Huston-Tillotson University, and a Master of Accountancy (MAcc) degree from Alabama State University.

Knox Selected For Aspiring Leaders Cohort
Huston-Tillotson University Vice President / Chief Operating Officer Wayne Knox (foreground) has been selected to participate in a cohort from the education, non-profit, and business sectors preparing the next generation of presidents of Minority Serving Institutions (MSI).
Knox was one of only 14 individuals chosen for the third annual MSI Aspiring Leaders Forum, hosted by the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. The forum will include a variety of sessions on topics such as presidential fit, fundraising, mentoring strategies, trustee relationship management, and crisis communication and media management. Additionally, MSI Aspiring Leaders will have the chance to focus on real case studies to learn firsthand what it’s like to lead an institution.

Downing Named To CIAA Hall Of Fame
Congratulations to Huston-Tillotson University Associate Vice President / Associate Provost Dr. Beverly Downing, who has been selected for induction into the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) Hall of Fame!
Dr. Downing had a legendary career as a player at Livingstone College and Championship-winning Head Coach of Women's Basketball and Softball at Saint Augustine's University.
