The Head's Heads UP!
As many of you know, last week, the health department advised me to quarantine the pre-kindergarten 3&4 class because of a positive case. Beth Clark and Kelley Calkins leaped into distance learning mode, providing routine for our littlest students with a zoom morning meeting and lots of resources online for parents. Fortunately, we have had no further cases thus far or transmission at school. All our pre-k class returned on Monday.
This week I have watched the complete joy the pre-kindergarteners brought to their return to the classroom! Teachers and students were so happy to spend their day in person. There are some reasons to be optimistic about the trajectory of COVID. But, we also realize being together is a gift we cannot take for granted.
Our staff, students, and families are all interconnected and reliant upon each other. I hope you will continue to minimize risk of COVID transmission outside of school, wear masks in crowded settings out in public, wash hands frequently, and stay home if you have signs of illness. The health you preserve may not be only your own!
Having to quarantine a whole group was a new experience for our school community, as we were lucky last year to have uninterrupted in-person school. With this most recent scenario, we saw how much we depend on each other for regular communication, flexibility, and responsiveness and concern, for the well-being of others. These community values are strong at CA, and I'm grateful!

The Golden Ticket!
We all know that libraries are treasure troves of immeasureable delights! But as children learn to love the adventure and wisdom of books, it does not hurt to sweeten the deal! There are golden tickets hidden in books around Chesapeake Academy's James Library. The lucky reader who checks one out gets a prize. Sully Cockrell found the first ticket of the year!

Kindergarten Learns from Innovators Past and Present!
Children learn by doing! Get those hands engaged and it will also engage those brains! Here we see Atlas utilizing two antiquities. Can you pick out what they are? You guessed it: a landline phone and an iron. In kindergarten, students are exposed to not just modern technology like iPads and Bee Bots but also to some technology of days gone by that can still be of great use today.

Great Gabbing Gourds!
Second graders enjoyed welcoming fall’s harvest by writing a story about an adventure with a gourd. The story starter began with finding a talking gourd on Grandpa’s farm. Our gourds and students traveled all over the world and experienced many interesting events.
|
Danger, Danger, Will Robinson!
Fourth graders designed and created their own robots in conjunction with reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Then, children set to work learning about narrative writing and composing their own vignettes (short narratives) using their robots as inspiration.

Osprey About Town!
In September 2018, with seed funding from a generous bequest by Carolyn Crewe Gray, the Strings Crewe was launched using the Suzuki method instruction for 6 to 12 year old violin students. Fast forward 3 years to September 2021, and 10 of these students graduated to the String Orchestra for Northern Neck Youth (SONNY)!
Some of these students performed in the back of the Northumberland High School auditorium prior to the Georgia Guitar Quartet performance as people came in. Osprey Lucas Claire and other music students played solos or duets with their teachers. Lucas is one of the first violins in SONNY, and played his piece by memory.

Transformations!
Sixth graders are looking for signs of a chemical change as they combine different chemicals carefully using good lab protocols. Students are on the lookout for either a gas to be made, a light to be emitted, a temperature change, a precipitate formed, or a physical property change.
|
Where Will You Be in 10 Years?
Sixth grade Writer's Workshop students imagined what their life would be like in 10 years when they reached twenty one years old. What exciting things will they be doing? Alex Fulmer announced in his presentation that he will be in his last year of Air Force training where he will be preparing to fly jets or command them. He can't wait to serve his country!

Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree!
Newton's laws of motion are three laws that describe the relationship between the motion of an object and the forces acting on it. The first law submits that an object either remains at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless it is acted upon by an external force. The second law maintains that the rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the force applied, or, for an object with constant mass, that the net force on an object is equal to the mass of that object multiplied by the acceleration. The third law postulates that when one object exerts a force on a second object, that second object exerts a force that is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first object.
Chesapeake Academy eighth graders are completing their unit on the Laws of Motion with a stations lab:
- Students practice hitting a tower of washers to see how many washers release from the other side of the tower (First Law).
- Students spin a balloon on a pin at various angles as it releases its air content (Third Law).
- Students investigate the impact of force by dropping pennies on a ruler with a launching penny at its end. (Second Law)
- Students spin a stack of marbles. (First Law, Inertia)
- And students try to catch washers on bent arms. (Second Law)
- Students compete in a spring-scale tug of war against two people with a rubber band. (All three laws)

Honor is Not Outdated!
As part of the community, each student is responsible for upholding the truth, respecting others and their property, and maintaining academic integrity. By having a common purpose and set of standards, students can also support their peers in the school’s quest to foster an inclusive, responsible student body. Pictured making his pledge, Jacob Hodsden is followed by Ingrid Carey, Yvelisse Cabocel, and Izzy Dew who await their turn.
The Chesapeake Academy Honor Code is designed to promote honesty, respect, citizenship, and integrity within the student community. This code of honor serves as the underlying ethical benchmark which all Academy students are expected to observe and respect. An Honor Code Signing Ceremony is held at the beginning of each school year for all Middle School students.
At the recent ceremony in Chesapeake Academy's Middle School, students solemnly pledged on their honor to uphold the Chesapeake Academy Honor Code as they publicly signed the Honor Board. The Student Council is responsible for promoting and explaining the Honor Code to the student body, as well as modeling the code in everyday practice.

CAPPA News
It's been a strange year and a half, which has prevented the in-person school activities where a lot of us would have been able to meet other CA families!
As such, we're calling for a new (to CA) mom gathering! Loraine Trollip (mom to Lily (4th) and Rachel (2nd)) has offered to host, on Sunday, October 24 from 3-5. Super casual and outside--and BYO (beverage, snack, picnic blanket) Loraine and her family live adjacent to the Tides. Please park on the outside of the entrance to the Tides Inn and walk in to the resort (towards the putting greens)--you'll see us gathered on the left hand side.
Please RSVP to Courtney Keplinger at cpieczynski@gmail.com if you're able to join--and hope to see you all there!

Coach's Corner
We have been so fortunate to have a full fall season, and the pride our student-athletes take in representing CA has been amazing! You can tell that they love playing with their teammates and representing our school and values.
One thing that has really impressed me is how much our student-athletes support each other--and not just when they are standing on the sidelines cheering their peers on during a game. Our Ospreys ask their friends how practices or games are going; they push each other to improve in practice; and they offer encouraging words to help each other bounce back after a mistake in a game. They really are "all in" for each other.
While wins are nice, and we want our student-athletes to see success, it is fun to witness how much they are winning in the other important areas of competitive play. Athletes are learning skills that will help them off the field/court, too.
-
Ospreys are finding ways to motivate their peers through positive words and actions to keep them going even if they are tired or frustrated.
- They are learning that sometimes an assist is more important to the overall success of the team than scoring a goal themselves.
- They are learning grace by thinking about how an opponent feels after a tough loss, and how they can win with dignity.
- They are learning the meaning of perseverance when they have to bounce back after a loss or when struggling to master a specific skill.
- They are also learning how to change their perspective of a loss or mistake; instead of it being a frustrating or disappointing moment, our student-athletes are implementing a growth mindset and finding ways to turn these times into a learning moment.
I have been impressed with the grit and determination our teams have shown this fall, and I love seeing how our athletic program complements the work that our Ospreys are doing in the classroom. Thank you again for all your support, and we look forward to continued growth success during the winter season!
Go Ospreys!
