Leadership in a Loosely Coupled, System
Multi-Stakeholder System
|
|
HueLife Co-Founder, Irina Fursman, Ed.D., was recently a guest on the Mid-America PTTC podcast to discuss her doctoral research around the question, "How does leadership occur in a multi-sector, loosely coupled system?" During the podcast, Irina takes time to;
- Explore different points of view on leadership
- Discover levels and dimensions of leadership in a loosely coupled, multi-stakeholder system
- Understand what competencies are necessary to lead effectively in this new way.
|
|
Learn more about the four dimensions of the system (the why, the what, the how, and the who) interplay and interact with each other in a dynamic, cyclical fashion where four levels of leadership are enacted by individual actors: taking responsibility, inviting to collaborate, forming and sustaining the “leadership” team, and balancing chaos and order.

Mid-America PTTC CoP

A note from our partner on how they are using facilitation skills to connect professionals and resources across the country
|
|
At the Mid-America PTTC, we believe prevention is better together and that together we are stronger. It is that belief that has inspired our community of practice (CoP) series for our Mid-America region. We have four different series all designed to provide a platform for our workforce professionals to share personal inquiries, case studies, network with professionals, or to support each other.
Pre-pandemic, CoP are an important professional learning strategy because:
- Complex problems require more implicit knowledge, which cannot be codified.
- Implicit knowledge can only be shared through conversations and observation.
- Collaborative and distributed work is becoming the norm.
- Knowledge sharing and narration of work make implicit knowledge more visible.
- New ideas come from diverse networks, often from outside the organization.
- Learning is part of work, not separate from it. Communities of practice enable the integration of work and learning.
All of that is marvelous, but now in we have seen the value of CoP grow exponentially. Social distancing, quarantine, isolation, and a desire for connection have been a pillar for our region during the pandemic. The need for prevention hasn’t gone away. Many would say our work is needed now, more than ever.
|
|
Our CoP’s have brought together substance misuse prevention coalitions, prevention T/TA providers, Drug Endangered Children Alliances, and folks from across the behavioral health workforce.
Through our Communities of Practice, we have created space for connection among people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to interact, frequently or even at all. Leveraging our facilitation methods, we have fostered dialogue between folks to explore new possibilities, solving covid-era problems, create win/win opportunities and build shared understanding of complex problems. Together is better!
As we reflect back on our CoP series, we can’t help but smile as we recall the participant’s
“I came in with ____, and am leaving with ____” responses.
· I wish I could start every week off with you all.
· I was feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Now I am feeling fired up!
· I came in with a problem I didn’t know how to handle. Now I have someone to connect with that can help me.
· And the list goes on!
As facilitators, we all have the power to create space that connects folks, empowers them, and supports them in more ways than one.
Interested in starting your own Community of Practice… HueLife can help!
Prevention is better together and together we are stronger.
