Farewell message from HUPO President Michael Snyder

HUPO: Leading the Future of Proteomics It has been a true honor to have served as HUPO President for the past two years. The field of proteomics has never been more exciting with numerous advances in technology, transformational research findings, and improved integration into systems biology and medicine. We can now profile thousands of proteins at rapid speed and with instrument sensitivities that enable single cell proteomics. Through the efforts of the Human Proteome Project (HPP) the number of uncharacterized proteins has rapidly diminished (to under 3,000) and the Human Protein Atlas has mapped the expression and subcellular localization of the majority of human proteins. HUPO 2019 Key Dates

HPP Call for Session Topics The HPP is starting to develop it’s activities at HUPO 2019 in Adelaide next year. This includes selecting the sessions that will be presented in the HPP track. If you have a B/D-HPP or C-HPP focused session topic that you’d like the HPP to consider, please email your suggestion to [email protected] before January 11, 2019.

A message from hPOP - Assay Invite The hPOP project to profile people from around the world has been highly successful in the sample collection. We have collected samples from each of the three regions: Boston (Pilot n = 31 individuals), Taipei (N = 106), Dublin (n = 115), Orlando (n = 84). Plus to increase North American numbers we have collected samples from the Bay area (n = 40). We are now ready for the analyses. On a google spread sheet we list possible assays. We are looking for volunteers to help carry them out.  Feel free to suggest additional assays. Our goal is to get these assays done in the next 2-3 months and then analyze the data and present the results at the next HUPO meeting in Australia. The analyses will take some time because there is lots to do we need to do age correction, BMI, etc. We suggest discussing results/analyses on consortium calls starting in January. Note the Snyder lab signed up for many assays but if there are volunteers to take over some of them that would be fine (we want to make sure that a basic set of analyses is done). We are also building an interactive database to get the data back to participants. 1. Please sign up for assays on the google spread sheet here (you will need to request permission) 2. Send any and all comments to us at [email protected]. Let us know if you would like to participate in any of the consortium calls. This is a very unique project and open access resource-we hope to get a high profile paper out of this.

The Human Proteome Project (HPP)

JPR Special Issue The JPR Special Issue 2018 (Associate Editor: Christopher M. Overall, Guest Editors: Paik, YK, Eric Deutsch, Fernando Corrales, Lydie Lane and Gil Omenn) will be finally released in early December. In this issue, a total of 32 papers covered 4 major research topics: (i) missing proteins (MPs), (ii) uPE1 proteins, (iii) bioinformatics tool development and (iv) biology/disease proteomes. In particular, the identification of a total 104 MPs that meet the stringent HPP guidelines have been reported, while an additional 107 MPs detected from the MassIVE database will be processed for submission to neXtProt release. We believe that this Special Issue marks not only a new chapter in the longest-term project on a specific theme, C-HPP and now HPP, but that it also presents major advances in the journey toward completion of the human proteome – a parts list in the context of proteome biology and disease. While tantalizingly near completion, this global journey must still overcome formidable challenges to finish the first accurate draft of the human proteome. The editorial team appreciates all of those authors who submitted their manuscripts for this special issue.

New C-HPP Executive Committee Members C-HPP PIC members re-elected Gilberto Domont (chromosome 15) to represent America, while Pengyuan Yang (chromosome 8) was elected to represented Asia and Oceania in C-HPP EC. Both elected candidates have 3 years term starting in January 1, 2019 and ending in December 31, 2021 and will be member of large of C-HPP EC. The C-HPP EC thanks the contribution of Ping Xu (chromosome 1) representing Asia and Oceania until the end of this year for his contribution to C-HPP EC work and we are looking forward for the further contribution of his team to the future goal of C-HPP as member of Chromosome 1 team.
