Early Career Researcher Committee (ECR)

We’re looking for the next HUPO Rising Star!

We are pleased to announce a call for the HUPO Rising Star Award, organized by the HUPO ECR and HUPO Awards Committee. Are you or do you know of an impactful ECR who deserves recognition? This career achievement award is designed to recognize early career researchers who have had an exceptional impact on the proteomics field and community. This impact can take the shape of publications, patents obtained, development of a commercial product, establishment of a course, training program, workshop or any other contributions or service to the field of proteomics. Candidates can self-nominate or be nominated, by a supervisor, a colleague, a superior, a client, a collaborator, etc.

Our first-place winner will receive a cash prize of USD $2000. The award will be presented at HUPO 2025 in Toronto, Canada alongside the opportunity to provide a short talk.

The deadline to apply is May 16, 2025.

There's still time! We've extended the deadline for the HUPO Early Career Researcher Manuscript Competition to April 18th, 2025

You haven’t missed your chance to submit to the HUPO Early Career Researcher Manuscript Competition! Submit your original research article, from the past year, by April 18th, 2025, for a chance to present your work at HUPO 2025 in Toronto, Canada. This competition, sponsored by Taylor and Francis, is a unique opportunity for early career researchers to gain visibility within the broader proteomics community.

We encourage early career researchers - postdoctoral fellows, young clinicians, and junior faculty - with a publication or accepted manuscript in the 2024 and 2025 calendar years to participate. Three finalists will be selected to present their work in a dedicated plenary session at HUPO 2025, where an expert committee will determine the “Proteomics Highlight of the Year” by an early career researcher.

Our first place winner will receive a cash prize of USD$1,000 and our two runner-ups will each receive USD$500!

The 3-Minute Thesis Competition is waiting for your submission!

Do you have what it takes to present your thesis in 3 minutes to a lay audience and make them understand your research? Do you have an exciting thesis topic that the community should know more about? If so, we invite you to submit a lay abstract for this year’s 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition!

Submit your lay abstract as part of the regular submission by the deadline of 16 May. Up to 12 finalists will be selected from the submitted abstracts to present at the inspiring 3MT session. Each speaker will showcase their thesis in 3 minutes with only one presentation slide, and a winner and two runners-up will be celebrated.

Even if you choose not to compete, this is a session you will not want to miss at the congress!

Eligibility criteria: Open to Ph.D. students who have not defended their thesis at the time of application. Applicants must be HUPO members.

How to Apply: Applicants should submit a lay abstract through the HUPO 2025 submission portal. The abstract should not exceed 300 words.

Selection process: Up to 12 finalists will be selected based on effective communication of their research topic in the lay abstract, together with the novelty and impact of the research.

Prize: $500 to the winner and $300 for two runners-up.

HUPO BD HPP Q1 Presentation

We are pleased to present the first video from the Biology of Disease Initiative, A HUPO Presentation - the first of 2 initiatives.

These efforts are primarily aimed at researchers, clinicians, and healthcare professionals who are interested in an understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie in various diseases. They also aim to engage academics and students pursuing studies in biology, medicine, and related disciplines. By sharing the latest findings and methodologies, these initiatives are designed to promote collaboration and inspire innovation across the scientific community.

It is my privilege to introduce the first of two presentations on the AI Proteomics Initiative and the Urine Proteomics Initiative.

These initiatives offer healthcare professionals with cutting-edge tools and insights to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies.

By integrating AI in proteomics, clinicians can better analyze complex protein data, leading to more personalized and effective patient care. Additionally, advancements in urine proteomics can offer non-invasive diagnostic techniques, improving patient comfort and compliance.

Highlighting a member of HUPO, we invite a diverse group of researchers from different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities to submit a profile for our monthly spotlight. This initiative aims to improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research, and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:

Markku Varjosalo, Finland

What is your current position and location?

I am a tenured Research Director and Professor at the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) & Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki, where I also serve as the Scientific Director of the Helsinki Proteomics Center. My group focuses on molecular systems biology and quantitative proteomics, using cutting-edge mass spectrometry to decode protein interactions, signaling pathways, and disease mechanisms. Finland might be a small country, but we make up for it with world-class science, and I’m proud to lead a lab that pushes proteomics forward on a global scale.

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?

I started in genomics, working with Jussi Taipale, convinced that DNA held all the answers. But the deeper I got, the more I realized that if you want to understand biology in action, you have to study proteins. Then I heard Ruedi Aebersold talk about mass spectrometry-based proteomics, and I knew I had found my calling. I joined his lab at ETH Zurich for a postdoc, where I saw firsthand how proteomics could revolutionize our understanding of complex biological systems. After an intense few years immersed in cutting-edge proteomics, I was recruited back to Finland to establish my own lab and develop the country’s proteomics capabilities. That decision set my career path, and I haven’t looked back since.
