Standard BioTools Inc. equips the life science industry with a unique suite of innovative and reliable multi-omic technologies that enable researchers to boldly explore biological challenges to advance human health.

In 2024, SomaLogic merged with Standard BioTools to bring the power of proteomics to the company’s comprehensive suite of genomics, mass cytometry and imaging mass cytometry tools. Standard BioTools now offers the entire line of SomaScan® high-plex, high-throughput proteomics services at our labs in Colorado and through our worldwide Authorized Sites program, offering the most comprehensive coverage of the proteome with 11,000 protein measurements.

The SomaScan Platform offers an end-to-end solution for protein biomarker discovery with service offerings and bioinformatics analysis to support basic medical research and biotech and pharmaceutical pipeline development. Using modified DNA aptamers, called SOMAmer® Reagents, the SomaScan technology provides high-affinity binding and specificity across a wide range of sample types, achieving sensitive detection in the fmol-umol range, from samples as small as 55ul.

The SomaScan Platform is optimized for reproducibility with coefficients of variation of ~5%, eliminating assay-to-assay variability and enabling longitudinal studies across populations. Standard BioTools also offers SOMAmer Reagents individually to researchers for experimental validation. With more than 1,000 peer-reviewed publications, the SomaScan Platform has been used by -omics experts for more than a decade.

HUPO Ambassador Working Group

Full Steam Ahead

In 2022, HUPO’s Executive Committee embarked on a planning process that generated an extraordinary Strategic Plan to revitalize and expand HUPO over a five-year period. The Strategic Plan created aspirational goals that will make HUPO a better organization tomorrow, including initiatives to realize these goals, and generated actions to support these initiatives.

The Plan’s main priorities and goals include:

  • Being an excellent resource for education, training, funding
  • Demonstrating the clinical value of proteomics
  • Creating Ambassadors for Proteomics
  • Becoming the standardizing force for proteomics
  • Having year-round activities

In addition, secondary goals were identified including:

  • Looking beyond human proteomics
  • Becoming a better partner for other organizations
  • Looking beyond only proteins (protein interactions with other “omics”)

Resulting from the Strategic Plan, one of the major initiatives is the creation of HUPO Ambassadors for Proteomics. A working group was established and they have been working diligently to move this initiative forward. The goal of HUPO Ambassadors will be to engage with communities outside HUPO including government, industry, clinicians and scientific societies. Sincere appreciation is extended to the following Ambassador Working Group members:

  • Stuart Cordwell (Chair)
  • YuJu Chen
  • Jennifer Geddes-McAlister
  • Mathieu Lavallée-Adam
  • Jochen Schwenk
  • Nicolai Bache

If you are interested in participating in this working group and/or have any comments or questions about the HUPO Strategic Plan, please contact the HUPO Office office@hupo.org

Get to Know the Finalists of the Prestigious Manuscript Competition

The manuscript competition is a unique platform that showcases exceptional contributions from postdoctoral fellows, young clinicians and junior faculty members to the proteomics field. Three finalists were selected to present their manuscripts published during the 2023 and 2024 calendar years in a dedicated plenary session at HUPO 2024. A panel of experts will evaluate their talks to select the “Proteomics Highlight of the Year”.

The ECR is delighted to showcase the finalists:

  • Stacy Malaker (Yale University, USA)
  • Leyuan Li (Beijing Proteome Research Center, CN)
  • Marc van Oostrum (Max Planck Institute for Brain Research, Germany)

In this issue we turn the spotlight to Stacy Malaker who submitted her work: Glycoproteomic landscape and structural dynamics of TIM family immune checkpoints enabled by mucinase SmE. Take a look at her short bio here.

Roland Bruderer, Switzerland

What is your current position and location?

I am the Head of Research and Development for LC-MS workflows at Biognosys AG, located in Switzerland.

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?

My journey in proteomics began with an interest in the structures of proteins and enzyme activity assays. When Ruedi Aebersold returned to ETH Zurich during my PhD, I had my first collaborative proteomics experiment on the ubiquitylation of the kinase Aurora B. It failed but sparked my interest in MS-based proteomics research. After my PhD at ETH Zurich, I joined Ron Hay’s laboratory at the University of Dundee to learn SILAC-labeled proteomics and applied it to the SUMO modification system. I worked with iPSCs at the Wilmut laboratory in the University of Edinburgh. During that time, I gained expertise in MS instrument maintenance, acquisition, and data analysis under the guidance of Ivan Matic and Mike Tatham. Upon returning to Switzerland in 2012, I contributed to the development of DIA (Data-Independent Acquisition) methods at both Ruedi Aebersold’s lab and Biognosys. In my initial work, we developed both DIA methods and targeted and untargeted DIA analysis and benchmarked it against state-of-the-art DDA workflows.
