"A mouse has a new liver every few days, but the lifespan of a mouse liver cell is hundreds of days” - Dr. Rob Beynon
In 1965, Robert Schimke led a team that examined the response of rat liver tryptophan oxygenase (then called tryptophan pyrrolase, the first enzyme in the breakdown of the gluconeogenic amino acid tryptophan) to glucocorticoids and to feeding of the substrate, tryptophan [ref 1]. – both treatments led to elevated enzyme levels in the liver. They concluded that glucocorticoids induced synthesis of the enzyme, whereas dietary tryptophan prevented degradation - clear evidence of the importance of the two ‘opposing’ processes of synthesis and degradation controlling the intracellular abundance of an enzyme. This was, parenthetically, one of the first examples of a connection between the transcriptome (controlling synthesis) and the metabolome (controlling degradation).

Thank You to all Who Joined and Participated in the HUPO ECR Panel Discussion on Science Communication
“Science Communication: Who, How, Where, and Why?” took place on November 16, 2022. This was the last panel session of the year after a great season of interesting sessions organized in collaboration with the European Proteomics Association’s Young Proteomics Investigators Club. These panels offer a space to foster professional development by engaging with the community. This time three delightful panelists: Dr. David Tabb from the Institut Pasteur, Dr. Ann Van der Jeugd from the Leuven Brain Institute, and Dr. Ben Orsburn from Johns Hopkins University shared their do’s and don’ts on science communication. They commented on what makes scientific communication engaging, as well as the importance of appropriately addressing your target audience. All in all, this panel session highlighted the importance of engaging in scientific communication no matter what kind of science you do! Thank you to everyone that participated and made this such a great event.
Stay tuned for the next panel sessions in 2023!

Each month a member of HUPO is highlighted. A diverse group of researchers representing different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities will be invited to submit a profile for the monthly highlight. This initiative will improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:

Aparna Srinivasan, Canada
What is your current position and location?
I just finished defending my master’s thesis in the labs of Dr. Hannes Rost and Dr. Anne-Claude Gingras at the University of Toronto.
How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
I discovered proteomics during my rotation in Dr. Rost and Dr. Gingras’ labs when I started graduate school. It was my first introduction to the application of mass spectrometry in a biological context. I especially loved learning about all the data analysis challenges that come with mass spec based proteomics.
What does being a member of HUPO mean to you?
Being part of the HUPO community is such an amazing way to learn about all the different applications of proteomics. I haven’t been able to attend a HUPO conference in person yet, but I look forward to an opportunity in the future!
