HUPOST Editor: Ben Garcia | Staff Editor: Michele O'Bright | January 2023
Happy New Year!
On behalf of HUPO President Jennifer Van Eyk, the HUPO Executive Committee and Council Members, we extend sincerest best wishes to all HUPO members and colleagues that 2023 brings much happiness, peace, good health and prosperity.
It was truly a great honor and an inspiring journey to serve as the HUPO President in the past two years. Looking back at the period of 2021-2022, the COVID-19 global pandemic continuously caused economic and social disruption, and seriously interrupted research projects, restricted travel and closed the borders of many countries, thus creating challenges for the congress organization and financial sustainability of HUPO.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." ~ African Proverb

When I started this unexpected journey two years ago, I was indeed full of worry if I was able to continue the previous great leadership in order to move forward and achieve transformative changes for the future of HUPO. I sincerely appreciate the great mentorship from past President Steve Pennington and past Vice President Susan Weintraub. At that time, I shared my firm belief that joint wisdom and collaborative efforts always inspire new ideas with success beyond the expectation of a single mind. It is truly admirable how passionate and committed many of the volunteers on HUPO committees and Council have been to the organization. The HUPO Executive Committee, all Committees, Council and HPP Executive Committee actively maintained activities, expanded promotion worldwide and continued the research of the human proteome. For the benefit of members, HUPO continues to create new resources including the Proteomics Knowledge Resource (PKR), proteomics tutorial videos and stories from HUPO members. It is nice to see that HUPO is approaching a stable status with 1100+ members from 57 countries and 36 national societies.

I am truly honoured and grateful to accept the role of HUPO President for the term 2023-2024. Thank you for the confidence placed in me and the entire HUPO Executive Committee (EC) team to continue to build our legacy. I also want to acknowledge the extraordinary leadership provided by Yu-Ju Chen and the previous HUPO Executive. Their work and dedication, particularly with the Strategic Plan, has moved the association into a new era. Together with the EC, I look forward to serving the HUPO membership and advancing a number of HUPO activities and initiatives.

HUPO boasts a number of distinctive strengths, namely the powerful passion and tireless work of its volunteers on various committees and initiatives with diversity and inclusion.  These individuals together with HUPO’s management team, have realized a number of significant accomplishments over the past seven years including a 38% increase in financial assets, a 143% increase in membership, 122% increase in Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) members, highly successful virtual and in-person annual congresses, the digital HUPOST newsletter, implementation of the Proteomics Knowledge Resource (PKR), use of social media platforms, the establishment of the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Initiative and much more.

In looking to the future and how we can continue to build on our accomplishments, a Strategic Plan Working Group completed a thorough review of HUPO and focused on new aspirations that would create a better HUPO in the future. The most important aspirational goals were prioritized with the following major initiatives being developed to help attain these goals:

Expand the impact of proteomics in science.
  • Develop and enable HUPO ambassadors
  • Expand social media including the online presence of HUPO
  • Support the next phase of human proteome projects and other new initiatives
  • Collect and use “Success Stories” to support several goals

Join Us for HUPO 2023 – Busan, South Korea
Hosted in Partnership with:
It has already been more than 3 years since the COVID-19 pandemic began. No one thought it would last this long. While we are still in a crisis, we have already seen signs of hope. Nothing will dampen our enthusiasm for proteomics. This was proven by high interest, attendance and support recently observed in the highly successful HUPO 2022 Congress in Cancun, Mexico. It was an honor and pleasure being there with leading global experts in the field of proteomics and promoting the city, Busan, where the upcoming HUPO 2023 congress will be held. We expect to continue releasing its powerful energy here in Busan as well.

The members of the Scientific Program Committee have started to get down to business and organize the principal program including inviting world renowned speakers. The budget committee is active in developing a concurrent resolution on the budget as well.
Another piece of great news that we are excited to advise, is that we are creating a new logo for HUPO 2023. We will work hard to make the HUPO 2023 Congress one of the best that has ever been held. We will offer both exciting education and engaging networking opportunities that have been missed so much over the last couple of years. We look forward to making strong and coordinated efforts to ensure a successful hosting of HUPO 2023 in Busan, the most beautiful city in Korea. May this new year bring new happiness, new goals, new achievements, and many new inspirations to your life!

National and Regional Society Presidents Meet at HUPO 2022
A very successful meeting of 20 national and regional proteomic society presidents and representatives was conducted during the HUPO 2022 Congress in Cancun. A wide variety of topics and ideas were discussed including agreement to increase connections and communications between all proteomic societies. Discussion also included ideas around training and education, internships, international fellowships, scholarships and the importance of close links and communication between regional and national societies.

Supporting early career researchers (ECR) and facilitating opportunities, connections and webinars were also suggested and enthusiastically supported. Funding for the HPP Grand Project and international projects such as The π Hub Project, were also considered with the importance of science excellence being agreed to by all. HUPO 2023 Busan representatives were also in attendance, encouraging participation at the 2023 congress and welcoming all ideas and suggestions for ensuring a superior program and event.

Another Successful HUPO ECR Manuscript Competition at HUPO 2022
In line with previous years, the HUPO ECR initiative held the 2022 Manuscript Competition, sponsored by Expert Review in Proteomics by Taylor and Francis in Cancun, Mexico. This year’s edition once again saw a high number of submissions, so it was no surprise to see such strong manuscripts as well as a high attendance at the plenary session dedicated to the competition. The authors of the top 3 submitted manuscripts presented talks at this session, which were evaluated by a panel of experts. Each talk was presented at a very high standard and after compiling the final scoring Dr. Wout Bittremieux (University of Antwerp) won the competition with his presentation entitled “A learned embedding for efficient joint analysis of millions of mass spectra” and received a cash prize of $1000. Dr. Ling Hao (George Washington University) and Dr. Rafael Melani (Northwestern University) were selected as runners-up and both won cash prizes of $500. We thank all judges, Anthony Purcell, Jennifer Geddes-McAllister, Jochen Schwenk, Rebekah Gundry, Teck Yew Low, Marc Wilkins, Juan Antonio Vizcaino, Daniel Kolarich for their time. Stay tuned for the next iteration of the competition. HUPO ECR will soon welcome you to submit your manuscripts for HUPO 2023 in Busan, South Korea.

Early Career Researchers Networking In-person at HUPO 2022 for the First Time in 3 years!
Thanks to our generous sponsor Mass Dynamics, HUPO ECR organized a networking reception in Cancun, Mexico for HUPO 2022, where early career researchers networked with each other and with senior scientists over food and drinks on a rooftop terrace.
Over 150 researchers played a fun networking game, made new friends and connections that may kickstart collaborations or help them find their next job! We look forward to organizing more of these in-person networking events in the future!
Thanks for Dropping by the HUPO Booth!
During the HUPO 2022 World Congress, the HUPO ECR initiative was featured at the HUPO booth in the Exhibitor Hall. There, HUPO ECR Initiative members talked about their activities with congress attendees. The booth was also where attendees could receive HUPO t-shirts that were designed by the Marketing and Outreach Committee and sign up for a raffle for a chance to win a free HUPO membership. In addition, HUPO ECR hosted three mentors (Drs. Yu-Ju-Chen, John R. Yates III and Henning Hermjakob) at the booth who discussed career perspectives with early career researchers. HUPO ECR celebrates its worldwide representation so we were very excited to talk to participants from all over the world! Thank you for dropping by and leaving a sticker on the booth’s world map!

2nd ETC Auditorium with:
Martin Krzywinski

Topic: The Essence of Data Visualization: How to Create Effective Figures of Your Data
Date: January 31, 2023
Time: 16:00-17:30 (Central European Time/Zurich)

Stimulated by a huge audience and feedback after the first ETC Auditorium on proteomics and academic writing, we are happy to announce our second speaker, Martin Krzywinski.

Martin Krzywinski works in bioinformatics, data visualization, science communication and the interface of science and art. He applies design, both data and artistic, to assist discovery, explanation and engagement with scientific data and concepts. Martin’s information graphics have appeared in the New York Times, Wired, Scientific American and covers of numerous books and scientific journals such as Nature and Genome Research. He is going to elaborate on how small changes to critical elements can turn a muddled figure into one that is clear and concise.

Submit your figures and posters to Martin’s dropline for redesign and discussion. The more you send in, the better. There are no bad figures, only figures waiting to be made better:

Benjamin Garcia, USA

What is your current position and location?
In the summer of 2021, I became the Raymond H. Wittcoff Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, USA. Before this, I was a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (2012-2021) and before that at Princeton University (2008-2012). Yeah, I move a lot.

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
Well, I got started in the field of mass spectrometry through undergraduate research in the lab of Carlito Lebrilla at UC Davis, and he introduced me to Jack Beauchamp (Caltech) at the Lake Arrowhead Ion Conference. Later I spent one summer at Caltech with Jack as a summer undergrad researcher. I mentioned to him that I wanted to go to graduate school to learn more about all the proteins our genome encodes (the Human Genome was being sequenced) and Jack said, “Oh, you want to do proteomics? Then you should go to graduate school with Don Hunt (University of Virginia),” so I did. The rest I guess is history.
