In Remembrance of Michael (Mike) J. Dunn, PhD. 1946 – 2024

Professor Michael (Mike) J. Dunn, PhD, was a pioneer in proteomics. He was the founding father of Proteomics in the UK and his influence spread globally. The founder of the British Electrophoresis Society which transformed to the British Society for Proteome Research, Mike was also a founding Council Member of HUPO. During his productive career, Mike used proteomics to study cardiovascular disease, heart transplant rejection and psychiatric disorders, uncovering novel mechanism and identifying potential circulating biomarkers documented in over 250 papers, book chapters and monographs. At the time of his retirement, Mike was the Science Foundation Ireland Professor of Biomedical Proteomics at  the UCD Conway Institute (2009) when in 2004 he joined the Proteome Research Centre established there by Stephen Pennington.

Mike was key in laying the technical foundation of proteomic technologies: setting the stage for the field to grow to what it is today. His hallmark characteristic was his exceptionally open and collaborative nature which reflected his science-driven approach and strong desire to share his knowledge and expertise.

Mike was a member of the Executive Committee of the HUPO Human Brain Proteome Project, co-Chair of the HUPO Cardiovascular Initiative, President of the European Proteomics Association, and President of the British Society for Proteome Research. He was also Editor-in-Chief PROTEOMICS (Jan 2001 on) and Proteomics Clinical Applications (2007on).

Since his retirement Mike pursued his passion for tennis, music and a newly developed interest in bridge. Mike was always supported by his amazing wife Marlene to whom he was married for over 49 years.

Mike’s death (on 10th December 2024) marks the loss of not only a great scientist but also a compassionate mentor, a dedicated colleague, and a cherished friend to many.

If you would like to leave a message to pay tribute to Mike please do so here.

Education and Training Committee (ETC)

Attention HUPO Members!

The " Proteomics Essay Corner" is on. We have our first submission.

The Symphony of Proteomics

In the dance of life, proteins play,

With post-translational tunes on display.

Phosphorylation sparks their flame,

A phosphate touch to fuel the game.

Cysteine whispers, bonds anew,

Redox shifts, a path to pursue.

Modifications subtle, yet profound,

In these small marks, life is found.

Take a look at the full submission here.

We invite you to write essays or poems that explore and endorse the vast and fascinating landscape of proteomics and related fields.

How to Submit:

Please send your essays or poems to [Justyna.Fert-Bober@cshs.org; blandine.chazarin@gmail.com]. There is no due date, but we wish to share the work on a monthly basis. Feel free to include a title and a brief description of your work if you wish.

Let’s celebrate the -omics world together over coffee and creativity! We look forward to your submission and to enriching our community with your thoughts and inspirations.

HUPO Education and Training Committee: Pre-Congress Training Course Summary

The HUPO Education and Training Committee (ETC) successfully organized pre-congress training courses during the HUPO Congress in Dresden 2024. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants for contributing to the success of these sessions.

The pre-congress training courses were well attended and provided valuable insights, helping participants deepen their knowledge of proteomics. If you have suggestions or recommendations for future training courses, please feel free to contact the ETC.

Fun Under the African Sun

Ubuntu Proteomics Summer School (UPSS) brings together an amazing list of speakers for our third event, being held in February 2025 in Durban, South Africa.

The UPSS is a one-week residential school with a track of concepts and applications. The summer school aims to help researchers:

1.     Learn more about proteomics from leading experts in the field

2.     Connecting to new networks and creating collaborative opportunities

3.     Explore new and dynamic locations (the summer school is a “floating” one and consequently changes location each year)

4.     Growing capacity to advance proteomics-driven research in multiple fields

Feel free to explore galleries from our 2023 and 2024 schools, watch some videos on our YouTube channel, or explore our X and LinkedIn profiles.

If you are interested in attending, then please apply here or spread the word to any interested parties.

Highlighting a member of HUPO, we invite a diverse group of researchers from different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities to submit a profile for our monthly spotlight. This initiative aims to improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research, and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:

Ole Nørregaard Jensen, Denmark

What is your current position and location?

I am professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at SDU – University of Southern Denmark, Odense, DK. I left Denmark for the US in 1990 to earn my PhD, and afterwards I worked as a postdoc in Germany, returning to Denmark in 1997. I am a native of Odense so I consider myself lucky to have landed this dream job in my home city.

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?

I got started in protein science and mass spectrometry in the late 1980’es when I pursued my Master’s degree project in prof. Peter Roepstorff’s research group at SDU, Odense. I applied LC separations and plasma desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PDMS) to study mutant hemoglobins in blood samples obtained from patients. I learned all the basics of protein chemistry and mass spectrometry. I was lucky to also get to travel to Manchester, UK to apply tandem mass spectrometry for peptide sequencing by FAB MS/MS on a huge 4-sector instrument. This was around the time when the ionization methods MALDI and ESI were developed and I used these new techniques during my subsequent PhD-studies at Oregon State University, USA, and my post-doctoral research projects at EMBL, Germany. The mid-1990’es were the pioneering days of proteomics and this research field has been exciting and developing ever since! I returned to SDU and Odense in 1997 as an assistant professor. In December 2024 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of biological mass spectrometry research at SDU with the 2-day CelebrateMS Conference!
