Nominations are now open for HUPO Executive Committee positions. This is an opportunity to lead the future of an extraordinary scientific organization and work with an enthusiastic global team to promote and represent proteomics.

The Executive Committee (EC) of the Human Proteome Organization consists of seven officers as follows: President, Immediate Past President or President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary General, Treasurer and two Members-at-Large. There is also an Early Career Researcher (ECR) representative that sits on the Executive Committee, however, this position is not considered an officer.

All positions, except the Secretary General (appointed by the President) and the ECR representative (appointed by ECR Committee), are to be elected by the vote of HUPO Council. A person elected to an Executive Committee position who is not a Council member shall serve as ex-officio on the Council. All officers must be active HUPO members and serve a two-year term, unless otherwise delegated by Council. Executive Committee nominees must be active HUPO members and scientists from the public or private sector with professional experience in the educational, research, or commercial activities related to the purposes of HUPO.

The Executive Committee should represent a regional and gender balance. The HUPO President position follows a rotation between three global regions: Central (Europe/Africa), Eastern (Asia/Oceania) and Western (Pan America). According to this rotation, the next President Elect should ideally be from the Central region.

The following Executive Committee positions will be elected by Council vote for a two-year term, commencing in January 2024:
  • President Elect/Incoming President (2024-2025)
  • Vice President (2024-2025)
  • ECR Representative (2024-2025) (appointed by ECR Committee, ratified by Council)

To submit a self-nomination, complete the Nomination Form here and include a headshot photo.

Deadline to submit nominations - June 30, 2023 - 11:59 pm PDT

The 14th annual MaxQuant Summer School will take place in Boston, Massachusetts, from June 26 to 30, 2023. The Summer School provides hands-on training in computational analysis of proteomics data generated by modern mass spectrometers. The practical parts will enable participants to perform sophisticated quantitative data analysis in their own future research using the publicly available MaxQuant and Perseus software.

Summer School website: https://maxquant.org/summer_school/
The registration fees include courses, coffee breaks, lunch, and one joint dinner. Accommodation is not included.
PSFaM Meeting

The Protein Structure, Function and Malfunction (PSFaM) meeting by the Proteomics Research in Interactions and Structure of Macromolecules (PRISM) group is happening on June 15 and 16, 2023 at the University of Saskatchewan.

PSFaM meetings bring together leading local, national, and international experts in the fields of proteins and protein structure and function. The meetings provide an opportunity for new faculty, emerging researchers, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows to present their work to a larger and more diverse audience, meet and network with other researchers and potential collaborators and connect and interact with potential mentors. These meetings are especially important for trainees because they will receive direct feedback that can help refine their research and identify areas for improvement as well as new trends and topics that you may want to explore in your own research in future.
HUPO HPP Special Issues of Journal of Proteome Research

The 10th HUPO HPP Special Issue has been published in the April issue of the Journal of Proteome Research (https://pubs.acs.org/toc/jprobs/22/4). As a consequence of lab shut downs in the pandemic, a smaller and later Special Issue was necessary. The hallmark anchor paper of every Special Issue is the HPP Metrics paper, led by Dr Gil Omenn and the leaders of neXTprot, the Peptide Atlas, the HPP, C-HPP and B/D-HPP: “The 2022 Report on the Human Proteome from the HUPO Human Proteome Project” by Gilbert S. Omenn, Lydie Lane, Christopher M. Overall, Charles Pineau, Nicolle H. Packer, Ileana M. Cristea, Cecilia Lindskog, Susan T. Weintraub, Sandra Orchard, Michael H. A. Roehrl, Edouard Nice, Siqi Liu, Nuno Bandeira, Yu-Ju Chen, Tiannan Guo, Ruedi Aebersold, Robert L. Moritz, and Eric W. Deutsch (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jproteome.2c00498)

ABSTRACT: The 2022 Metrics of the Human Proteome from the HUPO Human Proteome Project (HPP) show that protein expression has now been credibly detected (neXtProt PE1 level) for 18 407 (93.2%) of the 19 750 predicted proteins coded in the human genome, a net gain of 50 since 2021 from data sets generated around the world and reanalyzed by the HPP. Conversely, the number of neXtProt PE2, PE3, and PE4 missing proteins has been reduced by 78 from 1421 to 1343. This represents continuing experimental progress on the human proteome parts list across all the chromosomes, as well as significant reclassifications.

Call for Papers for the 11th HPP Special Issue of the Journal of Proteome Research

The Journal of Proteome Research is preparing to publish its 11th annual special issue dedicated to highlighting the progress made on the HUPO Human Proteome Project (HPP). The editorial team invites you to submit a manuscript for consideration by August 15, 2023.

The C-HPP Announces the Election of Dr. Heeyoun Hwang as a member at large to the C-HPP EC

Heeyoun joins the C-HPP EC comprised of Dr Christopher Overall (Chair), Dr Lydie Lane (Co-Chair), Dr Peter Horvatovich, Secretary General, Dr. Fernando Horvatovich, Dr Gilberto Domont, and Dr Gong Zhang.
C-HPP Workshop on Next Steps for the C-HPP and neXtProt

The C-HPP is holding a workshop prior to the HUPO 2023 Opening Plenary in Busan, Korea at the Centum Premier Hotel in the "Chelsea and Liverpool rooms" on Sunday, 17th September, 09:30 – 15:00.

After the workshop, the HUPO Council Meeting (by invitation at 15:30), Opening Plenary (17:45) and Welcome Networking Reception (19:30) will take place at the BEXCO Convention Center, just one block away. The Sunday workshop allows for attendees to arrive on Saturday, facilitating transfers from ICN if not arriving in Busan, and for the international attendees to rest and recover before the main conference.

Each month a member of HUPO is highlighted. A diverse group of researchers representing different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities are invited to submit a profile for the monthly highlight. This initiative will improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:
Eduard Sabidó, Spain

What is your current position and location?
I am currently the head of the Proteomics Unit at the Centre for Genomic Regulation and the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
I got started in the field of proteomics during my PhD at the University of Barcelona. I was working in an organic chemistry laboratory synthesizing probes for activity-based proteomics to study neuropeptide-processing proteases. The probes were modified peptides inspired by the original neuropeptides that trapped the proteases of interest. We then used mass spectrometry proteomics to identify the enzymes involved in the generation of each family of neuropeptides.
