HUPO is seeking candidates to serve on the HUPO Council for a three-year term that will begin in January 2024 (2024-2026).

Each councilor must be an active HUPO member who is a scientist from the public or private sector with professional experience in educational, research, or commercial activities related to the purposes of HUPO. To encourage a diverse age representation on the HUPO Council, in 2017 Council voted to remove the clause that requires Councilors to have at least ten years of professional experience.

We invite you to submit a self-nomination. Nomination details and the form can be found hereThe deadline for all nominations is May 19, 2023.

Last Call to Submit your Abstract and Participate in the Poster Competition: Deadline May 26th
Don’t miss your chance to participate in the HUPO 2023 Poster Competition! All graduate students (Master’s and Ph.D.), as well as postdocs, are encouraged to participate in the HUPO 2023 poster competition taking place on September 17-21, 2023 in Busan, South Korea. This is a great opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to showcase their research in a fun and interactive competition. To participate, simply indicate your interest in the competition while submitting your abstract by checking the appropriate box. A set of posters will be selected as finalists and will be evaluated during the conference by a jury. Winners in both categories (graduate students and postdocs) will each receive cash prizes. Good luck to all!
The 3-Minute Thesis Competition Returns to HUPO 2023
Building on the success of last year’s 3-Minute Thesis Competition, the HUPO Early Career Researcher (ECR) Committee and the Human Proteome Project (HPP) team up once again to bring this engaging competition. Present your Ph.D. thesis topic in proteomics in 3 minutes using one static slide and in a format that can be understood by a general audience. Selected finalists will have the exciting opportunity to compete in the final showdown, to be held during a dedicated session at HUPO 2023 Busan (September 17-21). To participate, simply submit a lay abstract via the HUPO 2023 abstract submission portal without scientific jargon that describes your Ph.D. thesis research topic for a general, non-expert audience. Abstract text should not exceed 300 words. Entrants must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program. Are you up for the challenge?
Call for Nominations for the Rising Star Award
Last year the HUPO Early Career Researcher (ECR) Committee launched a new award to recognize rising stars and leaders in the field of proteomics. This early career achievement award seeks to honor early career researchers who have had an exceptional impact on the proteomics field and community. This impact can take the shape of publications, patents obtained, development of a commercial product, establishment of a symposium, workshop, course, or training program or any other meaningful contributions or service to the field of proteomics. The winner of the award will give a short presentation during the closing ceremony of HUPO 2023 and take home a cash prize of $2000. To participate, candidates can self-nominate or be nominated. Introducing the Newly Elected Members of the HUPO-HIPP Leadership Team

We are pleased to announce the results of the 2023 HIPP election. We would like to thank Jenn Abelin, Nicola Ternette and Wei Wu for agreeing to stand for election. The newly elected members of the HIPP leadership team are:
Chair: Nicola Ternette
University of Oxford
Co-chair: Jenn Abelin
Broad Institute
A word from our newly elected Chair:
Thank you all for your participation in the HUPO-HIPP elections 2023! I am very honoured to take on the position as Chair of HUPO-HIPP together with Jenn Abelin. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Michal Bassani for her excellent leadership throughout the past two years, which enabled us to present and discuss important findings in the field in three high-profile webinars and allowed us to hold the 2nd HUPO-HIPP Summer School in Oxford, UK last year.

Each month a member of HUPO is highlighted. A diverse group of researchers representing different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities are invited to submit a profile for the monthly highlight. This initiative will improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:
Rommel Mathias, Australia

What is your current position and location?
I am a senior scientist working for the biotechnology company CSL, within the Research Organization. CSL Research employees are located at sites around the world including Australia, Germany, Switzerland and the USA, and I am based at the Bio21 Institute in Melbourne Australia.
How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
In my final year of undergraduate study, I was fortunate to have a 6-week placement in the laboratory of Prof. Richard Simpson, at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. During that time, I was inspired by the cutting-edge capability of mass spectrometry, and the unlimited potential of proteomics to solve complex biological problems. The following year, I joined Prof. Simpson’s lab to complete an Honours research project, followed by PhD studies that used proteomics to examine the contribution of extracellular modulators to enhance cancer cell metastasis.
