Early Career Researcher Committee (ECR)

Don’t miss your chance to participate in the Early Career Researcher 3-Minute Thesis Competition at HUPO 2025!

Can you explain your groundbreaking proteomics PhD thesis in just three minutes?

The HUPO Early Career Researcher (ECR) Committee and the Human Proteome Project are excited to bring you the 2025 3-Minute Thesis Competition! Take on the challenge of presenting your proteomics-focused PhD thesis in 3 minutes, using a single static slide, in a format that can be understood by a general audience. Selected finalists will have the opportunity to compete head-to-head during a dedicated session at HUPO 2025, in Toronto, Canada (November 9-13), where a panel of experts will select a winner and two runners-up. The winning presentation will take home a cash prize of USD$500 and the two runners-up will each receive USD$300!

To participate, submit a lay abstract (max. 300 words) describing your PhD thesis to a non-expert audience through the HUPO 2025 abstract submission portal. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a PhD program and be HUPO members at the time of submission.

The deadline to apply is May 16th, 2025. Are you up for the challenge?

Applications are open for the HUPO Rising Star Award!

Are you or do you know an ECR who deserves to be recognized for their contribution to the proteomics community? The HUPO Rising Star Award recognizes early career researchers who have had an exceptional impact on the proteomics field, whether that be through publications, patents, commercialization, education or any other contribution or service to the field of proteomics.

We caught up with last year’s HUPO Rising Star, Lindsay Pino, to ask why an ECR should apply for this award. Take a look at what she had to say...

The deadline to apply is May 16, 2025.

Education and Training Committee (ETC)

The ETC Committee welcomes its newest member, Dr. Sayantani Chatterjee.

Dr. Sayantani Chatterjee is currently a posdoctoral research fellow in the Analytical Glycoimmunology Group from Macquarie University in Sydney. Her research encompasses cancer glycoimmunology. Previously, she was a postdoctoral associate at Boston University and her research focused on investigating viral glycoproteomics, particularly of Influenza and SARS-CoV-2, using ion mobility mass spectrometry.

Highlighting a member of HUPO, we invite a diverse group of researchers from different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities to submit a profile for our monthly spotlight. This initiative aims to improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research, and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:

Yu-Ju Chen, Taiwan

What is your current position and location?

I am currently a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, where my primary focus is on research. I also served as the Director of the Institute for nearly nine years. In addition, I hold an adjunct professorship in the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan University, where I teach and supervise students.

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?

My PhD training was in photoionization mass spectrometry at Iowa State University, under the supervision of Prof. Cheuk-Yiu Ng. Due to family reasons, I returned to Taiwan and conducted postdoctoral research in laser photolysis and time-resolved FT-IR absorption with Prof. Yuan-Pern Lee at National Tsing Hua University. Joining Academia Sinica marked a turning point in my academic journey. I was drawn to the vibrant biological research in the life science division, which led me to shift my focus to biological mass spectrometry. I began with MALDI-based DNA and SNP detection projects and later embarked on my proteomics journey by learning 2D-gel electrophoresis from Prof. Shui-Tein Chen at the Institute of Biological Chemistry. Working on disease-related protein profiling—such as for gastric cancer and SARS—sparked my curiosity and passion for the complexity of the proteome and its role in disease. The gap between the limited sensitivity of 2D-gel methods (detecting only tens to hundreds of proteins) and the true depth of the proteome motivated me to develop new methodologies aimed at more comprehensive proteomic analysis in disease research.
