The ETC Committee has a New Chair

Prof. Giuseppe Palmisano has been voted as the new ETC co-chair. Dr Palmisano is currently an associate professor at the Department of Parasitology, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil and School of Natural Sciences, Macquarie University, Australia. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in mitochondrial physiopathology from the University of Bari, Italy.

“I am excited about the prospect of chairing the HUPO ETC and working with the committee members, the HUPO Executive Committee, and other committees and initiatives to promote excellence in proteomics education.”
ETC Welcomes a New Member

Dr. Shixia Huang serves as the Director of the Antibody-based Proteomics Core at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Her primary focus lies in high-throughput antibody-based proteomics, particularly in the identification and validation of protein biomarkers related to low-abundance regulatory proteins and their activation states.

Dr. Huang possesses expertise in genetic engineering, genomics, proteomics, and the study of mechanisms involved in breast cancer development and progression. In addition, Dr. Huang has initiated and has been leading biotechnology education summer programs for secondary school teachers. She is also in the process of establishing the BCM/TSU Collaborative Cancer Research Education Program (C-REP) to train underprivileged high school and college students.
ETC Invites You to UBUNTU Proteomics

Five days of proteomics learning - February 4-10, 2024.

Join the HUPO Marketing and Outreach Committee

The HUPO Marketing and Outreach Committee (MOC) is looking for new committee members.

If you are interested in actively contributing to the MOC activities please send your CV, and a brief description (3-5 sentences) of your motivation for applying to: marketing@hupo.org by November 30, 2023

The HUPO MOC is responsible for promoting proteomics via the HUPO brand to a wide audience using a range of tools and activities. The MOC organizes outreach activities, such as the delivery of proteomics presentations/seminars and the planning and running of workshops. To assist in these efforts, the generation of marketing materials for distribution using key contacts and social media platforms is used to reach audiences from scientific and non-scientific backgrounds. The MOC actively engages with third-party organizations to increase the profile of proteomics, for both visibility and potential streams of income and sponsorship. This combination of MOC activities is also aimed to increase the number of HUPO members. The committee reports to the HUPO Executive Committee, providing updates on successful events and future plans. In addition, the MOC coordinates the activities of several subcommittees including the Social Media, Branding, Website and Reach-the-world to achieve the missions of MOC.

Please note: Diversity will be considered when choosing a successful applicant.
Did You Miss the Mentoring Sessions during HUPO 2023? Here are some Highlights and Key Takeaways!

The early career researcher Mentoring Sessions that took place at the HUPO 2023 World Congress in Busan provided the opportunity for mentors and mentees to discuss important aspects of navigating an early career. In this interactive setting, participants were eager to ask questions that led to interesting and thought-provoking discussions. Click here to see the key takeaways from these discussions.
Are You Interested in Joining the ECR Committee?

The HUPO ECR Committee is a diverse group of individuals committed to providing career development activities, visibility, and networking opportunities to early career researchers in proteomics. We are always looking for new active members interested in contributing to the events and activities organized by HUPO ECR. Browse through the HUPO ECR webpage and see an overview of some of the HUPO ECR initiatives and congress activities!

If you are interested in joining this committee, please send an email to: ecr@hupo.org
Each month a member of HUPO is highlighted. A diverse group of researchers representing different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities are invited to submit a profile for the monthly highlight. This initiative will improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:
Ben Collins, Ireland

What is your current position and location?
I am a Reader in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast (https://collinslab.net/). The first question people always ask is ‘what the heck is a Reader?’ This is (more or less) an associate professor in the older British system of academic ranking. Maybe one day they will change this and I won’t have to explain anymore. The alternative would be to just get promoted to full professor I suppose :-)

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
I remember reading some popular science books as an undergraduate focused on genomics in the aftermath of the Human Genome Project. These books assured me that proteomics was going to be the next big thing, and apparently I believed them. I did an MSc project in a bacterial proteomics lab (mostly gels) and a PhD/postdoc where I was able to move into mass spectrometry and get my hands dirty. The MS part really spoke to me having been a chemistry undergrad and then an analytical chemist in industry for a bit. The interface of such analytical technologies with modern molecular biology seemed very compelling. After this I moved to Ruedi Aebersold’s lab in Zurich where there was a strong systems biology motivation to all of the work - and the rest is history.
