HUPO committees and initiatives are an essential part of the association's activities, mission and success. With previous support from HUPO members, volunteers, industry sponsors and past congress organizers, HUPO’s financial situation is currently stable. HUPO would like to utilize the available budget to formalize a way of supporting its committees and initiatives.
As a pilot, HUPO is inviting funding requests from all committees and initiatives. There is no restriction on the type of activity for which funding is requested, but all requests must detail how the proposed activity is supporting the HUPO mission.
Congratulations goes out to the HUPO Education and Training Committee (ETC) as the first group to receive $5,000 in funding support. These funds will support a number of activities including:
-
Honorariums for Speakers/Lecturers - A pool will be set up in a flexible manner to pay for lecture fees of the speakers. Standards and detailed arrangements are being further explored.
-
Grants for Trainees - Funds will be reserved for the costs of pre-congress training at HUPO 2022 and other HUPO-related education and training that require payment. The selection of recipients will reflect HUPO's diversity requirements. The number of recipients and grant standards are being further explored.
-
Miscellaneous Logistical Costs - Includes such items as teleconferencing software, printing, posters and souvenirs.

HUPO's Strategic Plan Progress
|
|
The last three years have been challenging, but many organizations have used that time to take stock and look at themselves and their readiness for the future. HUPO is a well-run and respected organization, however, there is always an opportunity for improvement. The future HUPO landscape will be different from the one when HUPO was first launched. To help facilitate and stimulate new ideas, activities and opportunities, the HUPO Executive Committee (EC) embarked on a Strategic Plan Review to ensure HUPO’s readiness and planned future activities provide the best possible services to its members and the proteomics community.
A Strategic Plan Working Group with representatives from the HUPO EC, HUPO committees and regional members, was formed in late 2021 and has dedicated significant time and effort on a regular basis to work with Facilitator Ian Wright and help shape the future of HUPO. Sincere appreciation is extended to the following individuals:
|
|
YuJu Chen
Ben Garcia
Henning Hermjakob
Sonja Hess
Peter Hoffman
|
|
Vera Ignjatovic
Yasushi Ishihama
Mathieu Lavallée-
Adam
Roy Martin
|
|
Stephen Pennington
Mathias Uhlen
Jenny Van Eyk
Uwe Völker
|
|
The process for creating the plan included input and feedback from across the proteomics community in all regions of the world through HUPO Council and the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB), and ensuring a step-by-step process of understanding the current organization, dreaming for the future, creating goals, deciding what is important, describing initiatives that would support success and creating a plan. In 2023, we look forward to “living the plan” and monitoring its implementation.
Please join us! We invite you to register for the HUPO 2022 Congress in Cancun and attend the HUPO Strategic Plan Overview. It will be an exciting time for HUPO and we encourage all members to take part on Monday, December 5 from 6:00-7:00 pm (local time).

Thank You to All who Joined and Participated in the HUPO ECR Panel Discussion
|
|
Since the HUPO Early Career Researcher Initiative, in collaboration with the European Proteomics Association’s Young Proteomics Investigators Club, relaunched its online panel series, we have enjoyed engaging sessions about relevant topics for fostering professional development. Our panel on September 14th, 2022, was no exception! The online panel, titled “How to start your own lab”, featured three remarkable panelists: Dr. Ling Hao (George Washington University, USA), Dr. Ben Collins (Queen's Belfast University, UK), and Dr. Lennart Martens (Ghent University, Belgium), who shared their experiences in navigating the start-up of their labs. They commented on the valuable lessons they learned along the way and how these are applicable to other aspects of forging a career path. Panel attendees were taught the importance of building a vision and finding the right mentors, prompting lively discussions. Thank you to everyone that participated and made this such a great event!
Our next online panel will be covering the topic, “Science Communication: Who, how, where and why?” Without a doubt, effective science communication drives more than just the dissemination of scientific research. It can have ripple effects through all aspects of society such as politics, healthcare, policy, and the environment. But how do you convey clear and concise messages? What is the best way to get these messages across a wide range of platforms? Get the answers to all these questions and more!
Stay tuned for information about the upcoming online panel in November.

Each month a member of HUPO is highlighted. A diverse group of researchers representing different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities will be invited to submit a profile for the monthly highlight. This initiative will improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:

Vera Ignjatovic, USA
What is your current position and location?
In August 2022 I made a big move from Australia to the US to start a new position as the Inaugural Assistant Director for Translational Research at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (JHACH) Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) and Professor of Pediatrics PAR in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The location is tropical St. Petersburg, Florida, in very close proximity to some of the best beaches in the US – St. Pete beach and Clearwater being most well-known.
How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
Proteomics was introduced to me by chance. It was one of those discussions where I was outlining the difficulties of working in the pediatric research space, particularly limitations related to the blood volume available for laboratory studies. This is something rarely mentioned in the adult research space. My colleague suggested that I look into proteomics, and I never looked back.
