Early Career Researchers Display their Communication Skills in 3-Minute Thesis Competition

HUPO ECR in collaboration with the Human Proteome Project (HPP) hosted its 3-Minute Thesis Competition sponsored by Mass Dynamics during HUPO 2023. In the second edition of this competition, twelve talented Ph.D. students faced the task of presenting their thesis project in a compact three-minute format with only one presentation slide and all did an excellent job! HUPO ECR would like to announce that there was a tie for the winner of this competition, due to a mistake caused by a software issue, which led to students not being acknowledged at the HUPO 2023 closing ceremony.

The winners are Dina Schuster (ETH Zurich, Switzerland), Janaina Silva (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Yun-Jung Yang (Taipei Medical University, Taiwan) and the runners-up are Dafni Skiadopoulou (University of Bergen, Norway) and Marvin Thielert (Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Germany).

HUPO ECR apologizes for this situation and will ensure that these students are highlighted during the year through HUPO ECR activities. Massive congratulations to the winners who each took home a $150 USD cash prize, a coaching session with a professional communications expert and a career orientation course with an expert in the field. The runners-up each received $100 USD cash prizes. All winners and runners-up were also given an annual subscription to Mass Dynamics Software. HUPO ECR would also like to thank the judges, Charles Pineau, Lydie Lane, Nicki Packer, Eva Csosz and Andrew Webb, as well as all attendees who took part in the session.

Early Career Researchers Receive Career Advice at HUPO 2023

The early career researcher Mentoring Sessions provide a space for mentors and mentees to come together and openly discuss relevant topics on navigating an early career, and those that took place at the HUPO 2023 World Congress were no exception!

The second session discussed “Promoting your Science” with panelists: Alexey Nesvizhskii (University of Michigan), Hyun Woo Park (Yonsei University), Paula Burton (Mass Dynamics), and Stephen Pennington (University College Dublin). Panelists highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong network of colleagues to efficiently promote their work.

Finally, the third session discussed the great “Geographical differences for academic job applications” that we observe between different continents such as the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. We could not have asked for a better panel of experts than Birgit Schilling (Buck Institute), Uwe Völker (University of Greifswald), Yu-Ju Chen (Academia Sinica), and Nicki Packer (Macquarie University) to highlight such differences.

ECR Networking Evening: Another Outstanding Event at HUPO 2023

Early career researchers had the opportunity to network with each other, with senior members of the proteomics community and industry members at a breathtaking venue during the HUPO 2023 World Congress in Busan.

Attendees from all career stages mingled over food and refreshments at 'Museum One'. Early career researchers also had the opportunity to interact with many industry leaders by taking part in a scavenger hunt to win prizes donated by the represented companies. Thank you to all industry members who provided gifts and networked with early career researchers: Absea Biotechnology Ltd, Evosep, Mass Dynamics, Quantum-Si, Sciex, SomaLogic, Seer and Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The main goal of the new HUPO single-cell proteomics (SCP) initiative is to provide guidance and create a comparative overview of novel mass spectrometry (MS)-based low-input and single-cell technologies. After the first reports of SCP with large cells (i.e., oocytes) the field has quickly moved to ever more comprehensive analysis of single mammalian cells or even subcellular components.1–3 A variety of workflows have since demonstrated valuable insights into cellular identities and their function, driven entirely by the proteome and their post-translational modifications.4–6 However, deep proteome profiling of single mammalian cells or small subpopulations remains an analytical challenge for most non-specialized laboratories.

Jennifer Van Eyk participated in a series of interviews for Voice of America about Broken Heart Syndrome where she discusses pioneering work through proteomics in solving the mysteries of women's heart disease.

Each month a member of HUPO is highlighted. A diverse group of researchers representing different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities are invited to submit a profile for the monthly highlight. This initiative will improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:
Dr. Qingsong Lin, Singapore

What is your current position and location?
I am currently the Director of the Protein and Proteomics Centre (PPC) at the National University of Singapore. I also serve as the corresponding principal investigator of the SingMass, Singapore National Laboratory for Mass Spectrometry, which is a consortium offering holistic solutions for mass spectrometry applications and technology advancement to Singapore research community and the broader industry.

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
I was first introduced to mass spectrometry during my PhD studies at the University of Toronto, Canada, where my research focused on the structure and function of antifreeze proteins. Towards the conclusion of my PhD, I had the opportunity to learn mass spectrometry operations and utilized it to determine the molecular weights of antifreeze peptides and proteins. In 2001, while finalizing my PhD thesis, I followed my supervisor to the National University of Singapore and played a pivotal role in establishing the Protein and Proteomics Centre. Since then, my work has been primarily centered on proteomics projects.
