News from the HUPO Human Proteome Project (HPP)

UniProt Actively Supporting the HPP Grand Challenge

neXtProt has not been updated since October 2023 and solutions are being sought to revive this major database. In the meantime, the resource remains available for users at both nextprot.org and nextprot.cn with a very large number of visitors each month.

To support the HPP as they move forward, UniProt has taken on the role of running the Proteomics Identification pipeline. This has involved upgrading existing UniProt MS peptide identification pipeline to meet the stringency of the HPP3.0 guidelines, and working with Eric Deutsch (PeptideAtlas) and Nuno Bandeira (MassIVE) to ensure all additional criteria for data evaluation are met.

In recognition and appreciation of the significant support, participation and guidance provided by HUPO's Industrial Advisory Board (IAB), one IAB member is highlighted each month. We encourage you to connect with these companies directly for further information about their involvement in HUPO and their products and services.

Quantum-Si: Redefining Proteomics with Next-Generation Protein Sequencing™

Quantum-Si brings the groundbreaking power of single-molecule proteomics to every lab with the first-to-market Next-Generation Protein Sequencer™.

Quantum-Si is pioneering a new frontier in proteomics with our Platinum® Next-Generation Protein Sequencing (NGPS) platform. Our mission is to empower researchers to explore the complexities of the proteome with single-molecule precision at the amino acid level, enabling the detection and sequencing of proteins and peptides that were previously difficult to analyze.

Proteomics is quickly moving beyond the limitations of traditional methods, and Quantum-Si is at the forefront, offering a scalable and accessible solution that brings the same transformative power to protein sequencing.

Traditional mass spectrometry has been instrumental in advancing the field of proteomics. However, certain applications—such as identifying unknown proteins, detecting protein variants and modifications, and screening proteins with peptide barcodes—remain challenging, particularly for those without mass spectrometry equipment or expertise. Platinum’s unique sequencing approach offers researchers an innovative solution to add to their proteomics toolkit, expanding the range of proteins and peptides that can be characterized and providing accessible, high-resolution insight into protein sequence and function.

By combining expanded coverage with ease of use, Quantum-Si’s technology offers a complementary tool for researchers seeking new insights into complex biological systems, from biomarker discovery to drug development.

Highlighting a member of HUPO, we invite a diverse group of researchers from different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities to submit a profile for our monthly spotlight. This initiative aims to improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research, and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:

Teck Yew Low, Malaysia

What is your current position and location?

I am an Associate Professor at the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in Kuala Lumpur. My wife and I returned to my home country in 2018. Additionally, I serve as the Secretary-General of Asia Oceania HUPO (AOHUPO).

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?

I began my journey in proteomics in the early 2000s as a postgraduate student at the National University of Singapore, working under the guidance of Professor Max Chung. My initial research focused on using 2D gels to compare rat models of liver cirrhosis. Realizing that LC-MS was poised to become the future of proteomics, I transitioned to Newman Sze's lab. I later moved to CEBI in Denmark to work with Jens Andersen, followed by a stint with Albert Heck at Utrecht University. These experiences provided me with invaluable opportunities to work alongside some of the leading experts in the field. I am deeply grateful to have these mentors and friends, and Max and Albert have been supportive of my development until today.
