The 33rd HBPP Workshop took place from May 22nd to 24th 2024, in Naas, just outside Dublin, in Ireland. It was a very successful, small but intense meeting with participants from Australia, Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the USA.
The meeting addressed clinical, animal, and cellular findings for neurodegeneration (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis) and neuropsychiatric conditions such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder and Autism. Whilst most of the work presented employed mass spectrometry-based proteomics, there was a trend of employing large-scale protein arrays of different kinds as well as combination of proteomics with other –omics platforms. Advanced statistical analyses including multivariate machine learning as well as Mendelian randomization of GWAS findings were elegantly combined with proteomics findings. Pathway analyses and investigations of posttranslational modifications were also presented.
Christopher Whelan from Johnson and Johnson presented an update from the findings of the open-access proteomics resource profiling on blood plasma samples collected from over 50,000 UK Biobank participants to elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying proteo-genomic discoveries (Nature. 2023 Oct;622(7982):329-338. doi: 10.1038/s41586-023-06592-6. Epub 2023 Oct 4.PMID: 37794186.).
In addition, we welcomed PreOmics at the meeting to display their latest products. We also discussed lab sustainability actions and accreditation (My Green Lab).

IonOpticks is a company at the cutting edge of chromatographic technology, specifically designed for proteomics research. Our mission is to provide researchers with the tools they need to perform high-precision protein analysis. We developed the famed Aurora Series™ C18 columns that allow researchers to achieve more accurate, reproducible, and comprehensive results.
Why choose IonOpticks’ Aurora Series™ columns?
Enhanced sensitivity and resolution
Our columns are engineered to deliver class-leading sensitivity and resolution, beyond anything previously achievable. This means researchers can detect even the smallest amounts of proteins and identify subtle differences that might be crucial for understanding biological processes or disease states. Aurora Series™ columns have become the gold standard for single-cell proteomics too, enabling researchers to discover more from their precious, and often scarce, samples.
Unmatched reproducibility
Consistency and reliability are key. IonOpticks products are known for their reproducible performance, ensuring that experiments can be replicated with the same high-quality results every time.
Plug-and-play
We design our products to integrate seamlessly into existing laboratory workflows, making the process of protein analysis more efficient. With our column heating solutions, proprietary nanoZero® fittings and integrated emitter design, we’re able to eliminate dead volume entirely. This allows researchers to focus more on their scientific questions and less on troubleshooting technical issues.
High throughput to deep coverage
From sub-7-minute gradients on our 5 cm Aurora Rapid™ for fast and low sample inputs, to the deepest coverage possible at over 10,000 protein IDs on our 60 cm Aurora Frontier™ - across the entire Aurora Series™ product range, you’ll find a solution no matter your workflow.
IonOpticks has a proven track record of success in supporting leading pharmaceutical companies and CROs worldwide. Our products have been instrumental in numerous high-impact studies, contributing to significant advancements in drug discovery, biomarker identification, and clinical research.
By choosing IonOpticks, you’re investing in the same precision, reliability, and innovation enjoyed by CRO’s, pharma and clinical settings. Visit us in the exhibition hall at HUPO 2024, Dresden to learn more, or visit www.ionopticks.com

Join Us for the Next Online Panel Discussion:
The Mystery of Grant Writing
Join the next online panel hosted by the HUPO Early Career Researcher (ECR) Committee on September 11th at 4pm GMT for a discussion on 'The Mystery of Grant Writing'. We have three wonderful panelists: Dr Jesper Olsen from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, Dr. Rebekah Gundry from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Dr. Mike MacCoss from the University of Washington. Grant writing is an essential part of a career in science, but where do we learn to write grants? How can we tailor our writing for specific grant calls? What can we do when a grant gets rejected? Join us to discuss all of these questions and more! Register below to receive the zoom link.

Spotlight on the ECR Manuscript Competition Finalists:
Sponsored by Expert Review of Proteomics Taylor and Francis
The Manuscript Competition at HUPO 2024 is your chance to see some of the most innovative work in proteomics from emerging scientists. It is a unique event showcasing exceptional contributions from postdoctoral fellows, young clinicians and junior faculty members to the proteomics field. We’re thrilled to introduce the three finalists who will present their cutting-edge research in a plenary session:
- Stacy Malaker (Yale University, USA)
- Marc van Oostrum (Max Planck Institute for Brain Research, Germany)
- Leyuan Li (Beijing Proteome Research Center, CN)
| |
This month, we’re shining a light on Marc van Oostrum, who will present his work: The proteomic landscape of synaptic diversity across brain regions and cell types. His research focuses on employing spatial proteomics to unravel the molecular organization and diversity of neuronal synapses. Take a look at his short bio here.
Participate in the Mentoring Sessions at HUPO 2024
The ECR Mentoring Sessions provide a space for mentors and mentees to come together and openly discuss relevant topics on navigating an early career in proteomics. Three insightful sessions will take place at HUPO 2024 in Dresden, Germany:
- Career Paths: What’s Next in Your Career?
- Mental Health: Building Resilience to Manage Work and Job Search Stress
- Mastering Mentorship: Navigating Conflicts and Personalities
These sessions are designed to foster lively discussions and offer practical advice to help you navigate your career. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors and connect with peers facing similar challenges!

Congratulations to all Finalists in the 3-Minute Thesis Competition
Can you share your PhD thesis in just 3 minutes? These candidates are up for the challenge! The 3-Minute Thesis Competition challenges Ph.D. students to present their research in a concise, engaging manner. Participants will have just three minutes and one static slide to communicate their thesis topic in a way that’s accessible to a general audience. Finalists have been selected based on the quality of their lay abstracts, which were crafted without scientific jargon and describing their research in 300 words or less. The competition will take place during a session at HUPO 2024 in Dresden, Germany, from October 20-24.

Fabio Nogueira, Brazil
What is your current position and location?
I am currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. Coordinator of the Proteomics Unit of the Precision Medicine Research Center and the Proteomics Laboratory of the Technological Development Support Laboratory, both at UFRJ.
How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
My first contact with proteomics was during my undergraduate course in Biology in a Brazilian Program of Scientific Initiation, in 2002. During this period, I was determining the proteome profile of aggregated cells from cowpea and cassava explants competent or not for somatic embryogenesis under the supervision of Prof. Francisco A. P. Campos. For this project, we did a lot of 2-Dimensional Electrophoresis, spot excision, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry analysis. For MS analysis, I met my supervisor Prof. Gilberto B. Domont, and the world of proteomics expanded for me. I got fascinated with the mass spectrometer and the possibilities of proteomics. From then until now, and certainly for a long time to come, I have been passionate about mass spectrometry-based proteomics, where I decided to pursue my scientific career.
