Mensaje del superintendente
Dear HUSD Community,

The wildfires in Northern California, and the smoke that resulted from that disaster, presented many challenges for our school district in the month of November. I am grateful to staff at all of our schools for navigating a difficult and unprecedented situation of more than 10 straight days of unhealthy air quality in the Bay Area. Our number one priority was to keep students safe while maximizing the learning opportunities available to them.

As we near the holiday break, I want to highlight the academic progress we are seeing at many of our schools. The results of last year’s state assessments indicate that the number of schools in our district showing improvement in English language arts (ELA) and math grew. Over the course of one year, seven schools (Cherryland, East Avenue, Eldridge, Palma Ceia, Park, Schafer Park, and Winton) showed growth of 5% or more in ELA while eight schools (Bret Harte, Cherryland, Eden Gardens, Fairview, Mt. Eden, Palma Ceia, Southgate, and Schafer Park) saw growth of 5% or more in math.

Over the course of a two-year period, five schools (Bowman, Palma Ceia, Park, Schafer Park, and Winton) showed more than 10% growth in ELA, while fours schools (Palma Ceia, Schafer Park, Southgate, Winton) experienced 10% or more growth in math scores. These improvements are a result of the collective effort of educators, students and families. Let’s continue to build on this success together.

It’s important that we also place our academic progress in a broader context. Hayward Unified School District has shown greater overall improvement over the past several years compared to similar nearby districts. Additionally, African-American students, Latino students, students with disabilities, and students who qualify for free and reduced lunch are more likely to meet or exceed standards on the state assessment in HUSD than in other nearby districts. We are proud to serve a diverse student body and feel encouraged that all students have the opportunity to thrive in our district.

Thank you for all you do to support students to reach their greatest potential. As the winter break approaches, I want to recognize that our community celebrates many different winter holidays and traditions. There are also members of our school community who do not celebrate holidays as part of personal or spiritual belief. This is an excellent time for us to take this opportunity to learn about each other with respect, and to honor and celebrate the diversity of who we are. I hope you enjoy your break and return in January ready for a wonderful 2019.

Sincerely,
Dr. Matt Wayne
Superintendent
