Progress for Eight-Year-Old "Brian"
Eight-year-old Brian (not his real name) has successfully graduated from treatment through HYC's Mental Health Services Program. Brian was referred by his grandmother due to emotional difficulties such as crying spells, isolating himself, and depressed mood. During his time in treatment, Brian had a hard time disclosing his feelings to caregivers, mother and father. As he progressed in treatment, Brian began to verbalize his feelings to his mother, "I feel left out and angry because you don't spend time with me." Brian also expressed to his father, "I feel sad when you went to jail and broke your promise." Through the process of counseling and learning new tools to express himself, Brian shared that he now feels more confident about expressing his feelings to his parents. Brian is using his coping skills such as listening to happy music such as "Hakuna Matata" or rock music to express how he feels. Way to go Brian! Keep rocking on!

Visions Learning Center (VLC) Students Go Back to School!
Helpline Youth Counseling (HYC) offers a Therapeutic Day Treatment Program for high school youth on probation, including a complete academic component along with intensive counseling and intervention services. VLC is the only program of its kind serving Probation youth in Southeast Los Angeles County.  Students have access to several fully-equipped classroom spaces in addition to the outdoor track and field at Liberty Plaza where they can engage in sports and recreation. VLC is operated in partnership with the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the Department of Child and Family Services, and the Los Angeles County Department of Probation. VLC offers at-risk youth a second chance at completing their high school education and getting back on track to educational success.

VLC students who were once credit deficient, gang involved, and/or with behavioral challenges have the opportunity to continue their education in a smaller classroom setting that eliminates distractions and helps them to focus on the overall goal of graduating from high school! Students benefit from counseling during their school day, and build rapport with the other students. The overall goal for VLC students is to have each and every student graduate realizing their full potential to create a path in their future toward meaningful employment, self-sufficiency and breaking the generational cycle of gang involvement and delinquency. At HYC, w e believe that every student has the potential to succeed, no matter what circumstances led them there!
