Hello Friends of HYC,

October is Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Month, and HYC has been a long-standing partner with the County of Los Angeles and the State of California to work with survivors and provide resources to empower them. During this challenging time of the COVID-19 crisis, domestic violence is on the rise. Families and individuals are under more stress with the safer-at-home orders, loss of employment, schools being closed, and financial hardships. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. We must continue to raise awareness to stop the violence.

Last year, HYC served 256 survivors of domestic violence. During the COVID-19 crisis, HYC has supported DV survivors with emergency services for food, clothing, PPE, diapers, and utility assistance. The scope of HYC domestic violence services includes intensive case management, support group services, mental health counseling services, life skills education services, including parenting education, and assistance with independent living skills, and household establishment skills. We also provide client advocacy, cycle of violence education classes, on-site childcare/youth activities, outreach to educate and raise DV awareness in the community, and referrals to legal services, including court support/restraining order services for domestic violence clients. Let's continue to raise awareness, provide education, and support survivors and those affected by abuse.

"I see this building every morning on the way to work and every evening on my way home and not a day goes by that I am not grateful for the the women that attend the groups and the counselors that run them. To an outsider, you may not understand the amount of strength it takes to pick yourself up and attend these groups. On the days you wish the ground could just swallow you up because you crave peace. When you're trying to put yourself together while at the same time everything is falling apart. These groups are a haven."~ Survivor of Domestic Violence

As an essential service to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, HYC has provided families with basic needs assistance including food, clothing, utility assistance, PPE equipment, diapers, and more. Families are in need of these resources, and we hope that you will help us to continue to be able to serve the community by registering for our Flavors of Fall event, making a donation, or joining our online silent auction. We are also seeking businesses who would like to sponsor the event or provide an in-kind donation for our online silent auction.
