The American Pope
Leo XIV
| | |
Word came quickly on May 8th, just a day following the gathering of the College of Cardinals at the opening of the Papal Conclave in Rome, that a new Pope had been chosen. And who wasn't surprised when it turned out to be an American, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now the Bishop of Rome as Pope Leo XIV, born in Chicago, a graduate of Villanova University, and a product. of American Catholic schools?
Pope Leo XIV and his family are deeply rooted in that respect. The Pope as a young student, and his brothers, attended and graduated from St. Mary of the Assumption School in Chicago's South Side; his father was Principal of Mt. Carmel Catholic School in Chicago Heights; his mother worked as a librarian at Mendel Catholic High School in Chicago's Roseland section; and, one of his brothers was Principal at St. Gabriel Catholic School in Chicago's Canaryland neighborhood. Upon being ordained, the future Pope's first assignment was as Director of Augustinian Mission and Chaplain at St. Rita of Cascia High School on the South Side. Also, he once served on the Board of Directors at Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa, OK. Consequently, the first American Pope is also the first American Catholic high school educator to become Pope!
Hudson Catholic joins the global Catholic community in welcoming Pope Leo XIV. In his initial address, Pope Leo said, "We are disciples of Christ, Christ goes before us, and the world needs His light." Hudson Catholic carries this message with us as we continue to build a community rooted in faith, service, and the liberating power of education.

Class of '25 Off to Their Future;
Administration Turns to Year End Businss
| | |
Congratulations, Class of '25!
We'll Be Watching You (and your exploits) Like A Hawk!
| | |
The Class of '25 is in the books as our 58th graduating class and 16th co-ed graduating class! And while 123 graduates have gone off to a well-deserved summer break in preparation for higher education in the fall, they have also left behind the job that educational administrators do at the end of every school year -- closing and balancing the books, in readiness to begin the next fiscal school year on July 1st.
As you know, because we rely greatly on the generosity of alumni and friends. our school year-end is always accompanied by an appeal to help us reach our budgeted fundraising goal, a vital component for balancing our operating budget and avoiding red ink. This year, we are seeking to achieve that with the announcement of a Challenge Gift of $40,000 by Gerard McGraw '72.
Gerry will match all gifts accumulating up to $40,000. As a result, we have the opportunity to raise $80,000 for The Fund for Hudson Catholic that can help us to reach this year's goal of $400,000, although more is needed beyond the Match total. Last year, we totaled $364,000 for the Annual Fund. And, so, you may expect to receive a letter of appeal following this publication. See below for what and why you are supporting Hudson Catholic. YOU! make this possible -- IN A BIG WAY!
| | The Baccalaureate Mass (recognized by the absence of Graduation Caps) was held in accordance with tradition on Thursday night preceding Saturday Graduation. Bishop Gregory Studerus presided. | | |
Twenty of our 22 Dual Degree graduates are pictured at the SPU Commencement on May 19th, where they received their Associate degrees. Eight members of this 5th DD Cohort are choosing to attend SPU next year, as Juniors, and will continue to receive tuition discounts, to add to their tremendous tuition savings made possible by the HC-SPU Dual Degree Program arrangement. Our Scholars are:
Jean-Marie Bamba, Arman Bhatti, Rebeka Castillo, Craig Chownec (a Legacy Hawk - Walt Chowanec '90), Briana Davis, Carlos Drouet, Khya Dutton, Andrei Fernandez, Danny Fuentes, Diego Hernandez, Iilal Imran, Janiyah Lee, Michael Leon, Zachery Mathias, Nicole Mutuku, Oskar Mejia, Luciano Padilla, Henil Patel, Sophia Sanchez, Angel San Elias, Emani Santiago Deleon, Analicia Williams.
All Hudson Catholic donors should take a minute to pause and reflect on these accomplishments, which you have helped to make possible. It is your gifts that subsidize Hudson Catholic tuition which makes possible these even grander savings and opportunities for our young Hawks!

Did You Know? The Baccalaureate Mass, a staple and tradition at St. Aedan's, wasn't always held there. In 1969, the Baccalaureate Mass was held on a Friday night at St. Paul of the Cross Church in the Jersey City Heights. (Send recollections, and the reason why, to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org)

Message From The President,
-- Terry Mathews
| | |
Each year at graduation, I speak to the senior class. Today I would like to share some excerpts from that speech that I delivered to our 123 graduates.
“When you are in education long enough, you come to the realization that each class has its own personality, its own identity. And special classes have an identity and a personality and that special something else that just makes them unique, makes them memorable, makes it hard to say goodbye. The Class of 2025 is one of those classes.”
Every teacher that I have spoken to has shared one statement about you…they all say “I’m going to miss this class”. You may not realize it, but believe me, that’s a heckuva statement coming from teachers at the end of a long school year! The big question is Why?
We can certainly cite your accomplishments as a class: we have a valedictorian going to UPenn, 19 student-athletes who will continue their careers in college, 22 students who earned Associate Degrees while going to high school, thespians who have been offered scholarships because of their acting talents, we even have a few astronauts – well at least a few who went to Space Camp and that’s close enough for me. We have students who are going to trade schools because they already know their career paths. And we have students who have given immense service to their communities. Wow!
But guess what? That’s not why we’re going to miss this class.
We’re going to miss this class because collectively, you are one of the kindest, most empathetic, most accepting groups of young people we have ever known.
Most important, you gave strength to us adults, and you did it in the best of times and in the worst. When we lost Coaches McKnight and Cunningham, we were all lost…students and adults. I hope we were able to give you strength during that difficult time, but I KNOW you gave the staff and faculty strength. When I addressed the school in our prayer service on that terrible day, I didn’t know if I would have the right words…I still don’t…and I didn’t even know if I would get through it. But I did, and we did, because of you, the students, but especially this senior class. You were there for the underclassmen, for each other, for the teachers, and for me. When I sat in my office afterwards and cried, Victoria came in to offer ME her tears, her support and her love. I knew I was supposed to give that to you, I didn’t realize how much I needed it from you. So many of you checked on us - you checked to see if your teachers and counselors were okay. You will never know just how much of yourselves you gave to us. For that, I will be forever grateful.
To care about others even when you are suffering yourselves is an incredible gift. It’s the most Lasallian thing you can do….the most Christ-like thing. You walk the walk.
So, as you leave the Hawks Nest, what more could I possibly ask? Well, it’s pretty simple to say, but really hard to do. My big ask is that you try not to change. Oh, you’ll change physically and politically and socially. But don’t change at your core. Don’t change the things that have made you so unique. So special. Always continue to CARE. It’s your superpower.
This world needs young people who will fix it through their actual actions, not their social media profiles. It needs real role models, not Ai generated facsimiles. It needs real human beings not reality show stars. It needs people who are honest and empathetic, who care, not about themselves but about others, who build up rather than tear down, and who aren’t afraid to love in a world that sometimes forgets. This world needs you.
So, 4 years ago I started by saying Welcome. Today, I end by saying Thank you. Thank you for giving us the gift of you. Thank you for making me a better person for having had you in my life. And thank you for letting me be a part of yours. Class of 2025, it has been my privilege to be your President-Principal. I love each and every one of you.”

| | To Our Student(first)-Athletes(second!). The national average of students who get to participate in collegiate athletics is 7%. On National Signing Day, 16 Hawks joined three Hawks in the winter, in committing to attend colleges and universities to play athletics at the collegiate level. Most importantly, these commitments mean financial aid to offset the costs of attendance, in some cases, fully. These 19 Hawks represent 15% of the graduating class of 123, more than twice the national rate for scholar-athletes. | | Assistant Principal Mrs. Sarah Barbi, on left, proudly presents Hawks making their college commitments to pursue their academic and athletic careers: front row, L-R: Amijah Frazier - University of New Haven, Women's Rugby; Emani Resto - Union County Community College, Women's Basketball; Ariana Figueroa - New Jersey City University, Softball; Rebeka Castillo - St. Peter's University, Women's Volleyball; Sophia Sanchez - Ohio State University, Women's Rugby; back row, L-R: Chad Perkins - Rowan University, Men's Track; Aiden Smith - Bowie State University, Men's Track; Denzel Gamble - Ramapo College, Men's Track; Vincent Kind - St. Thomas University, Football; Oskar Mejia - Ramapo College, Men's Swimming; Christian Kelly - Ramapo College, Men's Track; Craig Chowanec - St. Peter's University, Men's Soccer; Adam Kone - Monroe College, Football; Jude Wilson - Brandeis University, Fencing. To the ensemble and stage crew of the Hawk Drama Society for their recent production and successful performances of West Side Story on The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic. Forty-five Hawks in the cast and crew worked in the footlights and behind the scenes. And look at that stage!! | | The Hawk Drama Society will be back with its summer theater camp production of Descendants the Musical -- for grades Kindergarten through 10th. Based on the growing success of our productions on The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic, the Drama Society's ambitions will grow with the addition of a fall musical featuring thespians from grades 9-12 in Beetlejuice. And, yes, a spring musical has been chosen, but no spoiler alert here! That will be announced via a 'reveal event' at the upcoming Cast Party on June 5th. Mrs. Sarah Barbi and Mrs. Erin Drennan-Eckel are to be highly commended for their contributions over the years to consistently produce top-notch stage productions that put our Hawks in a position to garner significant scholarship money year after year from notable organizations and schools to pursue their talents in the performing arts. | | To our Junior Class, who hosted representatives of Baylor University. All the way from Waco, TX to The Home of The Hawks, the Golden Bears traveled a long way to recruit our sought-after Hawks. | | |
To members of the Hudson Catholic Photography Club and their moderator Mr. Frank McGady who emerged in Manhattan on their customary year-end field trip, this time to explore the West Side environs of the High Line, Hudson Yards, Little Island, The Vessel, and the Moynihan Train Station on a 7.6 mile walking tour.
| | To the Student/Partner Alliance, without whose support our Hawks would face greater challenges in their high school years; to the S/PA Mentors whose sharing of their time, life experiences, and coaching are instrumental in the success of our Hawks; and, to our sponsored and mentored Seniors who responded to the support they received and rewarded the S/PA and their mentors for the trust placed in them with success in the classroom. Another great year brought to us by the S/PA! | | |

Farewell, Mr. Joseph Amorino, 1953-2025
Revered Faculty Member, 1979 - 1999
| | |
A fixture on Hudson Catholic Faculty for over 20 years, Mr. Joseph Amorino, Ph.D, of Upper Montclair and formerly of the Marion section of Jersey City, passed away recently at the age of 71, leaving behind his partner of 50 years, Robert Calderone '72, his brother Samuel Amorino '81, and a legacy of art appreciation and learning that endeared him to his students and to all at Hudson Catholic.
At the time of his departure from Hudson in 1998, The Commentator hailed Joe with these brush strokes: "For twenty years, Dr. Joseph Amorino has brought the quality of art education and appreciation to our school in a totally different level, a quality filled with energy and profoundness. Dr. Amorino leaves us to be a part time assistant professor at Columbia University Teachers College, where he received his doctorate degree this year....."
He was most recently Associate Professor and Fine Arts Program Coordinator in the College of Liberal Arts at Kean University. At Hudson, Joe chaired the Art Department -- teaching drawing, design, technical drawing and oil painting; moderated the Art and Photography Clubs, and also taught on the Science Faculty. Numerous international journals and magazines published his art works and scholarly articles. A New York Times article on June 4, 1995 titled "A Teacher Coaxes the Artist From Within” featured Joe, along with some student testimonials. Brian Davis ‘96, a junior in Mr. Amorino's technical drawing class at the time, told the paper that the analytical aspects of the class had helped him understand the most basic tenets of art. "You can't just coast through this class. He teaches you how to understand color and light so you can express yourself through them."
"When the leaves came out this spring, I noticed every little detail," said Geferjohn Pagador ‘95, a senior at the time, who was planning to study art at New York University. "I'm looking at everything differently now."
Thank you, Joe Amorino, for the lives oyu touched, all for the better. A grateful Hudson Catholic and its graduates salute you. Rest in peace.
| | Where Would We Be Without Our Mothers? | | The 1982 Hudson Catholic Mothers Guild | | Hawks Documenting Papal History | | On a long-planned trip to Italy, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Raveteir '81 happened to be in Rome during the time of the Papal Conclave, so they decided to visit St. Peter's Square and, not long after making their way into the Square, witnessed, first-hand, the historic rise of he White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel symbolizing the election of a new Pope. Now fully caught up in the festiveness of the atmosphere, they felt obligated to await the appearance of il Papa. Lo and behold, these are their pix documenting the event for posterity. | | | | | |
First Appearance
of Leo XIV

Just ten days following his election, Pope Leo XIV celebrated his Inaugural Papal Mass in St. Peter's Square. Peter Morales '74 (NICE HAT!) and his wife, Margaret, were there to join in and document the unique occasion. One photo proves that "you can take The Hawk out of Jersey City, but.........."

We have a feeling that Jimmy has not yet reached his peak in baseball competition.

Have Roundball, Will Travel. Luther Muhammad '18 is developing a reputation of being willing to go anywhere for a good game of basketball. He recently left Poland to join a first division team in the Tel Aviv district of Israel - Ramat Gan - making it a big step up, both contractually and competitively, from the professional competition he faced in Poland, New Zealand, and Finland before that. He seems to have adjusted well. After breaking in slowly in his first few games, he scored 22 points in a recent game.

Helping You Find Something to Watch Tonight. Daniel Zapata '95 is a Senior Software Engineer at Netflix in Redwood City, CA. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California. After a career start at IBM, and then a dive into the fast-paced world of startups and innovation, he was drawn to Netflix 14 years ago, with its strong culture and sharp focus on execution. There he has had the opportunity to work across multiple parts of the viewer experience and, today, is focused on developing the next generation of systems powering the Netflix application experience -- a global user interface rollout, built to help viewers find something to watch faster and more intuitively.
| | Grateful for his Mentor. Christopher Soprano '93, a Freelance Sculptor working with the Jim Henson Company, readily attributes his artistic abilities to the mentorship of the late Mr. Joseph Amorino. | | |
Sought-after Speaker. Marco Poisler '88 recently addressed the European Breakbulk Conference held in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
| | |
YES!!!! Hall of Famer Jack Curry '82 recently returned to Hudson Catholic yet again to address Hawk students about his career in sports journalism and share advice on career paths. Jack reports that he had a lively and enriching discussion with some smart and inquisitive students. Jack was grateful, as always, "to Terry Matthews for the invite; to the administrative staff for making it such a memorable day; and, to the young men and women who showed why they are poised to do amazing things."

Hail to the Chief. Peter Griese '78 has just retired as a Battalion Chief from the Jersey City Fire Department after nearly 43 years of service, 1982-2025. His final tour was May 28th, with a retirement date of today, June 1st. His Class of ‘78 once had nine graduates serving on the FDJC.
| | |
Rock of Ages. Tony Monte '78, our very own Art and Music Faculty member, who otherwise has spent a career in the music industry, recently met with and interviewed Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer Joan Jett, one of the fiercest women in Rock 'n' Roll. The basis for the interview is a documentary film that Tony is producing about the history of WNEW-FM and its stable of legendary D-Jays, such as Scott Muni, Pete Fornatale, Jonathan Schwartz and 'The Nightbird', Allison Steele, who were pioneers of 'FM Rock' and played important roles in popularizing the progressive rock era of FM broadcasting in the 70s, 80s and 90s. We can't wait for the arrival of the finished product. Did you know? Tony is personal friends with Roger Daltrey of The Who. The chance encounter that led to the friendship while Tony was a Hawk is a story that is worth telling -- in a future edition of 'BTL'.
| | |
Difference Maker. 2009 Hall of Famer William Keegan '73 keeps doing the work that earned him his perch in our Hall, proving that the Hall is not the end of a line, but merely a stop along the way. Bill was recognized by the Russ Berrie Corporation as a 2025 Making A Difference Award Honoree, for the work he does at and with the organization of volunteer first responders, HEART 9/11, that he leads into disaster zones
| | |
In the Footsteps of Doc Brophy. The Twin Boro / Strulowitz & Gargiulo Physical Therapy practice in Jersey City has been owned or run by Carl Gargiulo '73 for decades and over the years he has brought Hawks into his practice. Here, Carl, left, is joined by Nate Abjelani '18 and Andrzej Slugocki '92 at their 1 Nardone Place facility off Kennedy Blvd on the border of The Heights and Journal Square.
| | |
A Gift to the School. Mike Londrigan ’72. After he was diagnosed and in his chair, and could not run anymore, Mike took up stained glass. He made a Hawk for the school and presented it to President Matthews at the school recently. Terry plans to find a place of honor to display it on campus.
