Habitat CFC July News
Habitat CFC’s Annual Board/Family Picnic
On Wednesday July 17th, bad weather didn’t put a damper on our Annual Board/Family Picnic. We just moved the Hawaiian themed party to our warehouse in Bridgeport. No one could’ve asked for a more wonderful gathering where Habitat homeowners, future homeowners, volunteers, the Habitat Board and staff members enjoyed great conversations and good food.

Habitat CFC families put in a lot of hard work and Habitat CFC staff give a lot of support throughout the homeownership process, and we couldn't be more proud when that hard work and dedication pays off. It's great to be able to celebrate this at the picnic!

Helping Turn Dreams into Reality
Our Family Services Department is the first contact for the majority of people who are interested in our Future Homeownership Program. We had a New Applicant’s Meeting on June 1st for those who filled out a pre-application and met the basic requirements. At this meeting, the Family Selection Committee educated the participants about the Habitat program and explained in detail how to fill out the application which they received at this informative session. Once the application is received by certified mail at Habitat the difficult part begins for the Family Selection Committee. They would love to accept everyone who applies but Habitat can only build approximately twelve houses per year. The need is so great in Fairfield County for those who have low income to be given the opportunity of owning their own home. Our non-profit organization has helped many realize the dream that they have been aspiring to for many years. Our goal at Habitat CFC is to build more houses in order to continue putting smiles on the faces of our future homeowners and their children.

The many functions of the Family Services Department are varied and far reaching. The team works with each person that qualifies and is accepted into the program. The department is there for the family during the process of working their 500 “sweat equity” hours after they have signed a Letter of Acceptance.Family Services makes sure they fulfil their obligation of attending the educational workshops to better prepare them for owning their own home. The final step in the journey towards homeownership is the closing. This is the day when all the hard work pays off and our families sign the paperwork that makes their American dream come true.

All this work that is done with so much dedication would not be possible without Iris Cordero Taylor, Director of Family Services & Community Liaison; Maribel Sanabria, Family Services Manager; Leonila (Leo) Ayala, Family Services Coordinator and Nereida De Lopez, Family Services Specialist. This team of devoted Habitat staff works diligently to better the futures of our homeowners.
BNT One of Habitat CFC's Important Partners
Habitat CFC’s Interim CEO, Carolyn Vermont, joined Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust (BNT) last week for a celebration to welcome their new CEO Noah Gotbaum to the organization. Habitat CFC has had a long partnership with BNT working together to offer Habitat’s future homeowners courses on topics such as Financial Fitness, CHFA Pre-Purchase Class, Creditboss Workshop, and numerous other classes which help our families become successful homeowners. We are excited Noah is on board at BNT and are looking forward to discussing collaborations where we can work together to increase the number of affordable housing units in Bridgeport!
