Habitat Happenings | December 2018
Hello from our Executive Director
Dear Friend of Habitat,

The time of year has approached where gatherings with friends and family become frequent. Whether for Christmas or New Year's, could you imagine not having enough space to host your own family or friends? What if your landlord didn't allow lights, a Christmas tree or if your rent was so high that you struggled to afford gifts for your children or for a gift exchange at work? Unfortunately, these scenarios are a reality for many low to moderate income individuals and families who are our neighbors, co-workers or fellow community members.

Every day at Habitat for Humanity, we strive to help people make decent and affordable housing a reality for themselves. When families partner with our organization to purchase their own home or to complete a necessary repair, our housing solutions provide a hand-up and a pathway to self-sufficiency. In fact, Habitat housing programs are known to create better health, education and economic outcomes for both adult and child household members, and our solutions improve quality of life.

At a very basic level, we also provide the opportunity to decorate, paint and host holiday gatherings. Around this time of year, that thought resonates with me, particularly when I think about someone who is experiencing an opportunity like holiday decorating or party hosting for the first time in their life.

The photo accompanying this text is from a homeowner who purchased a home from us nearly two years ago. She shared this Christmas photo and another of her home decorated for Independence Day. She's a proud homeowner, and we're proud of her for making her dream a reality.

Please remember to appreciate your home this holiday season. It is something that many of us take for granted.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Sarah Beckman
Executive Director

Our Christmas Wish List
Have you ever heard a non-profit organization say their budget is tight? We have! In fact, our employees live in a world where supplies and administrative needs are often overlooked because our priority is to fund our housing programs and serve as many individuals and families as possible. This theme rings true when we write grants or seek funds from companies. They, too, are most interested in supporting our housing programs over administrative needs.

So for Christmas this year, we have created a wish list of office supplies, technology items and other administrative items that typically are not funded through a traditional grant or corporate support but certainly would help us start our 2019 year off strong.

Would you consider shopping for us this Christmas? We'd certainly appreciate it!! Simply follow the link below to our Christmas Wish List. When items are purchased, they will automatically be removed from the list so there is no need to coordinate your purchase with us. Items can be shipped to or dropped off at the following address: Habitat for Humanity Lakeside, 1911 N 8th St, Sheboygan, WI 53081. You can ring the doorbell at our business office entrance (blue door) on 8th Street, Monday-Friday between 8:30am-4:30pm.
"Tooling Through the Twenties" Gala Raises $23,000
Thank you to all of our supporters who were able to attend, sponsor or donate to our 25th Anniversary "Tooling Through the Twenties" Gala! We are excited to share that a grand total of $23,115 was raised through sponsorships, ticket sales, pre-event donations and from the silent auction, raffle and heads or tails game.

All of the funds raised through the Gala will support our housing programs including the Home Buyer Program, Home Repair Program and Rock the Block Program. You can find more information on all of our programs by visiting our website at www.habitatlakeside.com

As we look forward to 2019 and the start of our 26th year, we are excited to share that our "Tooling Through the Twenties" Gala will be back as an annual fundraiser. We look forward to sharing our 2019 date with you soon. In the meantime, be sure to check out our event photos on our Facebook Page by clicking on the event photo button below.

Holiday Lights Recycling
Did you know that you can recycle your old, broken or unwanted holiday lights at the ReStore? We have a bin near our cash register when you walk through our front doors. Drop them off now through the end of January and help support Habitat Lakeside's mission.
Volunteer Openings
Habitat for Humanity Lakeside is always in need of volunteers. Some of our biggest needs are listed below. Please contact us if you are willing to help out!
ReStore Customer Services Assistants
Do you enjoy working with others and have great customer service experience? We have a huge need for individuals who have an interest in volunteering as customer service assistants. There's been a large influx of donation calls over the past couple of weeks and it has been difficult for our ReStore staff to keep up with them all.

Volunteers in this role would receive and respond to telephone and in-person customer or donor inquiries. Orientation and training would be provided. Two hour shifts are available between Tuesday-Friday from 10am-6pm and Saturday from 9am-4pm. Please reach out to Emily at [email protected] or 920-458-3399 ext. 303 if you are interested.
Adopt a Lot
We are looking for individuals or groups to adopt and maintain one of our vacant lots for the winter months. Typically this means shoveling the sidewalk anytime there is 1 inch or more of snow. Lots in need of adoption include:
  • 1500 block of South 9th Street
  • 1100 block of St. Clair Avenue

Please reach out to Emily at [email protected] or 920-458-3399 ext. 303 if you are interested.
Build Site Openings
We have been hard at work on our construction site located at 3106 S 9th St and will finish the exterior portion of the home this month. That means we will begin working on the interior portion in January (yay warmth!).

Our typical build days take place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30am-3:30pm. We need help on the following dates:
  • Sat, Dec 15 - 2 openings (siding)
  • Wed, Jan 9 - 6 openings (paint/trim prep)
  • Wed, Jan 23 - 10 openings (painting & underlayment)
  • Fri, Jan 25 - 6 openings (trim/cabinets)
  • Sat, Jan 26 - 6 openings (trim/cabinets)
  • Wed, Jan 30 - 6 openings (trim/clean-up & our last build site day until spring)

Individuals and groups who have volunteered with us before can click on the orange build site registration button below to sign up for a shift in your Volunteer Up account.
If you have never volunteered with Habitat Lakeside before or are interested in reserving a full day for a team build, please reach out to Emily at [email protected] or 920-458-3399 ext. 303 to reserve your spot and learn how to register for the first time.
Office Assistants
The Habitat for Humanity Lakeside business office is a very busy place year round. We are looking for 1-2 volunteers to help with administrative work once per week for 2-3 hours at a time. Some examples of ongoing work we have include: stuffing envelopes, data entry, research, copying, filing, answering phones or returning phone calls. If you are interested in this opportunity, please email or call Emily Nuernberg at 920-458-3399 ext. 303 or [email protected].
