Habitat Happenings | July 2019
Hello from our Executive Director
Dear Friend of Habitat,

The end of June marked the end of another fiscal year for Habitat for Humanity Lakeside. As I reflect back on the year we had, there are a few different things which stand out. They include:

  • Having the opportunity to work in partnership with 30 individuals through our Home Buyer, Home Repair and Rock the Block programs to provide simple, decent and affordable housing solutions to improve their quality of life
  • Involving over 420 wonderful volunteers in our mission who contributed over 8,500 hours
  • Celebrating our 25th Anniversary as a Habitat affiliate and have a very successful "Tooling Through the Twenties" Gala to celebrate the occasion
  • Working with our Board of Directors and staff to develop a new Strategic Plan which will drive our work and increase our capacity to serve more families through our housing programs over the next five years
  • Involving 43 students and interns in our mission from two colleges and five area high schools and providing them with construction, retail, business management or human services learning opportunities in our office, our ReStore and on our construction sites
  • Learning about, strengthening and creating new partnerships and collaborations with the local faith community, other nonprofits, the City of Sheboygan and numerous local contractors

These are just a few of the highlights from the last fiscal year. I look forward to sharing more of them at our Volunteer Appreciation event and in our Annual Report in the coming months. In the meantime, please read on to learn what's new as we enter our new fiscal year.

Sincerely,

Sarah Beckman

Construction/Housing Updates
Construction is moving along at 2725 Wilgus Avenue in Sheboygan (see photos below). In the coming weeks, the roof will be finished, subs will complete their work and Habitat will resume our work with volunteers. The home will be complete for future homeowner Robin and her two children to move in to just in time for the new school year. We can't wait to welcome her home! In the meantime, we'd like to shout out and say thank you to our financial sponsors and in-kind partners for this home (see below). A typical home we build can cost up to $175,000. When we factor in-kind partnerships, that drops to around $135,000. Our financial sponsors are investors in the sense that they help fund the up front costs for our homes (as does our ReStore). Habitat then does financing in house, offering a 20-30 year no interest mortgage to families who meet the qualifications for our program. When our homeowners make their mortgage payments, they too become investors in our mission as their payments are cycled back into the upfront costs for other families receiving a hand up (not a hand out) through one of our housing programs. If you're interested in knowing more about our financing model or how you can become an investor in our mission to support what we're doing in Sheboygan County, please reach out to our Executive Director, Sarah Beckman at [email protected] or at 920-458-3399 ext. 302.

On June 10, 2019, we welcomed Emily Kretz to the Habitat for Humanity Lakeside team as a Summer VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America).  She'll be serving with us in this volunteer role for 40 hours per week for a full 10 weeks this summer and will be helping with Rock the Block neighborhood outreach and a crew leader recruitment program.

Emily is an Oostburg native and has shared the following about herself:
"I just graduated from the University of Kentucky (UK) with my BA in Psychology and Social Work and I'll be returning to UK this fall to complete my master's degree in social work. I'm excited to learn a lot this summer at Habitat as it's a different role from my internships I've had so far through school. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, crocheting, and playing with my guinea pig, Nemo."

If you'd like to reach out to Emily to welcome her to Habitat Lakeside, she can be reached at 920-458-3399 ext. 307 or [email protected].
On June 12, 2019, Habitat for Humanity International launched Cost of Home, an advocacy campaign to improve home affordability for 10 million people in the United States. An excerpt from the press release is included below. CLICK HERE to read more about the campaign.

ATLANTA (June 12, 2019) – Nearly 19 million households across the United States are spending at least half of their income on a place to live, often foregoing basic necessities like adequate food and health care to make ends meet. The stability that housing should bring continues to remain out of reach for many people.

In response to that challenge, the global nonprofit housing leader Habitat for Humanity is launching its first-ever nationwide advocacy campaign in the United States. Through the   Cost of Home campaign , Habitat will mobilize volunteers, community members and partners throughout the country to find the solutions and help create the policies that will allow 10 million individuals to meet their most basic needs.

“For more than 40 years, Habitat has been making safe, decent and affordable housing a reality, one family at a time,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “The challenge in front of us obliges us to do even more. Not only will Habitat lift our hammers to build affordable homes, we will lift our voices as one to declare that every family should be able to afford the cost of home.”

Locally, Habitat for Humanity Lakeside, is one of over 200 Habitat affiliates nationwide that has signed on in support of the national campaign.
On June 25, 2019, Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies released their 2019 State of the Nation’s Housing Report. This report paints a detailed portrait of the U.S. housing landscape and outlines critical data for analyzing the nation’s housing need. Such data as, 1 in 6 U.S. households pay half or more of their income on a place to live.

Habitat for Humanity International, through the Cost of Home Advocacy Campaign, was excited to be a sponsor of this year’s report. While the report finds that the number of households paying 30 percent or more of their income on housing is slowly dropping, there is still more work to be done. Too many low-income renters and homeowners still face acute affordability challenges and new home construction is falling short of the need, especially as the stock of private low-cost rental homes continues to plummet. Another major concern is that the white-black homeownership gap widened over the past two years, even as the nation’s overall homeownership rate inched up.

The report clarifies how, if we’re concerned about affordability and helping everyone have a fair chance at homeownership, we need to pay attention to the whole housing ladder, including renters with the lowest incomes. The report also points to several types of policy change that could help. CLICK HERE to access the report and watch the recorded hour-long release event that our Habitat for Humanity international CEO, Jonathan Reckford, was part of.

  • Heidi Hediger - 64 hours donated in the ReStore

Each month, we will be selecting a Habitat for Humanity Lakeside volunteer to share their volunteer experience in our newsletter. Our mission would not be possible without you and we think it's important for you to inspire others who also give their time to us. Here's Roger, who has been a ReStore volunteer for a number of years.

“Being in this store, working with nice people, and loving the work that I do, that’s my favorite part about volunteering. We are helping the community and we know that it’s working, and that’s all I ever wanted.”
– Roger, ReStore volunteer
Current Volunteer Needs
Habitat for Humanity Lakeside is always in need of volunteers. Our biggest needs this month are listed below. Unfortunately, we currently have a wait list for build site days so there are no openings listed (except Rock the Block Crew Leaders and Lunch Providers). Please reach out to Emily Nuernberg, Volunteer & Special Events Manager at 920-458-3399 ext. 301 or [email protected] if you are willing to help out!
Volunteers Needed for Brat Days
For the second year in a row, Habitat for Humanity Lakeside has been selected as a Brat Days Charity Challenge partner. This means that we are seeking volunteers to help fill Habitat shifts we are asked to fill. Shifts are available on Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3 and range from collecting tickets to working in the food/beer tents. Please reach out to Emily using the contact information above if you are willing to sign up for a shift on the Habitat team. All volunteers get a free meal and drink while volunteering at the event.
"Tooling Through the Twenties" Gala Committee Members
We are looking for individuals to join our event planning committee for our annual "Tooling Through the Twenties" Gala. Whether your experience is in planning events, graphic design, community outreach, or you just have a general desire to get more involved in our mission, we would love to set up a time to tell you more about this committee in person. The general time commitment is 1-3 hours per month which includes a meeting about once per month in the evenings and outside work such as volunteer recruitment, entertainment research, sponsorship/raffle/auction solicitation and event night participation. This year's event will be held on Friday, November 1, 2019. If this is something you are interested in, please contact Emily using the information above.
Rock the Block Crew Leaders
Habitat for Humanity Lakeside is looking to recruit 10-15 Crew Leaders for our 2019 Rock the Block event on Thursday, September 12 and Saturday, September 14. A Crew Leader is an individual who is skilled at certain tasks such as porch repairs, exterior painting, landscaping or brush removal and is willing to lead a small group with this task during the event. Our Construction Manager will meet with you prior to the event to walk through the punch list and tool list for the task to make sure you feel prepared to oversee volunteers in completing the task assigned to you for the day. Crew leaders must be able to commit to a full shift which runs from 8:00-4:00 on Thursday and 8:00-4:00 on Saturday. If this is something you are interested in or would like to learn more about, please contact Emily using the contact information above.
ReStore Painting Crews
Our ReStore is looking for individuals or small groups of 2-6 people to help with a large painting project going on in the ReStore. No painting skills are needed however volunteers must be comfortable with climbing a ladder to paint. We will provide all of the supplies and an orientation to the project. Interested individuals or groups can sign up for a 2-4 hour shift on Mondays & Tuesdays between 8:30am-4:30pm, on Wednesdays-Fridays between 10:00am-6:00pm and on Saturdays between 9:00am-4:00pm. Reach out to Emily using the contact information above if you are interested in learning more or signing up.
Office Data Entry
Our office is in need of individual volunteers who are interested in coming into our office to assist with data entry of information into our volunteer and fundraising database. Because this task requires training, we do ask for volunteers interested in this role to be able to commit to at least two hours of time per week between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. If you are interested in this opportunity, please reach out to Emily using the contact information above.
Lunch Providers
Do you enjoying cooking or are you part of a group that is looking for an opportunity to give back to the community together? This is a great opportunity for individuals, church groups, families and student groups to give back to our mission. We feed volunteers on the build sites on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and we feed volunteer crews in the ReStore when we have a full day project. Right now, we are in need of lunch providers for the following dates:
  • Friday, July 19, 2019 (food for 10)
  • Saturday, July 20, 2019 (food for 10)
