Habitat Happenings | October 2018
Hello from our Executive Director
Dear Friend of Habitat,

More than 30 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day. This year's World Habitat Day was earlier this week. Even though the day has now passed, I still want to draw your attention to it because it is near and dear to our mission.

On World Habitat Day, Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat affiliates across our country join partners around the world to rededicate ourselves to recognizing the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter. Habitat's message is that every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future, and that a decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health and success that might have been part of a family’s life for years, and in many cases for generations.

Today, I ask you to think about the shelter that you have when you go home every night. Do you consider it to be adequate? As part of World Habitat Day, I am taking on a 31 day challenge to think about what adequate shelter really means and what things I might take for granted in the shelter that I go home to each night.

Will you join me in taking this 31 day challenge? All you need is this PDF calendar and a coin jar. Call or email our office at 920-458-3399 or [email protected] once you complete the challenge to drop off your donation and to let us know your challenge is complete.

Sincerely,

Sarah Beckman

Habitat Seeking New or Gently Used Laptops
Do you work for a company that is rotating out gently used laptops for new ones? Perhaps you have a gently used laptop at home that you no longer need?

Habitat has grown in the past several years and we are in need of four additional laptops to add to our inventory. We would greatly appreciate an in-kind donation of new or gently used laptops that have been or can be reset to manufacturer settings. Gently used laptops would need to be 3-4 years old or less to make sure we are improving what we have.

Please reach out to Sarah at [email protected] if you or someone you know would like to support Habitat in this way.
A New Price Discount System is Coming to the ReStore
On November 1, 2018, our Sheboygan ReStore will be rolling out a new color coded price reduction system. This pricing system has been successfully used throughout the ReStore community to help rollover inventory, increase sales and keep customers coming back.

What to know:
  • Price tags will be one of five colors
  • Price tag colors are introduced and rotated on the first of each month, offering automated markdowns on inventory
  • The longer an item has been on the sales floor, the greater the discount
  • Items will rotate through the following categories: priced as marked, 20% discount, 50% discount and 75% discount
  • Signs will be posted at the checkout area and throughout the store to indicate what color and markdown price is in effect for the current month
  • With monthly markdowns, it will take four months for inventory to rotate from full price to 75% off

We are very excited about this new system and the growth opportunities we expect it will yield for our ReStore. We appreciate your patience as we roll it out.
Group and Individual Volunteer Opportunities for October
October is gearing up to be a busy month for volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Lakeside. Here are some opportunities we have available. In addition to the opportunities listed, we are also seeking new ReStore volunteers to help with afternoon shifts Tuesday-Saturday. Please reach out to Emily Nuernberg, our Volunteer & Special Events Coordinator at [email protected] or 920-458-3399 ext. 303 to inquire about ReStore volunteering or any of the opportunities below.

Build Site
Our build site has been shut down for a short period of time between builds but we are going to be breaking ground on two new homes this fall which means there will be volunteer opportunities on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30am-3:30pm. Two immediate days that we need assistance on include:
  • Saturday, October 27 (new construction)
  • Saturday, November 10 (new construction)

Individuals and groups can follow this link to sign up to volunteer . Pre-registration is required. Contact Emily (contact info above) with any questions.

Lunch Providers
We are seeking individuals, couples or groups to volunteer to prepare, deliver and serve lunch to our build site volunteers at 11:30am on select Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Lunch providers are typically preparing a meal for 6-18 people depending on the day and task. We need lunch providers on the following days:
  • Saturday, October 27
  • Saturday, November 10

Please contact Emily (contact info above) to reserve one of the dates listed or to inquire about dates in future months.

Office Painting
We are seeking 1-2 detail oriented people to assist with cleaning, sanding and painting three office doors and the trim around them in preparation for new signage that will be installed at the end of October. We anticipate this work taking around 8-10 hours over two days to allow paint to dry between coats. The work can take place Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm. Individuals interested in this project will be left unsupervised after given instructions so you should be comfortable working alone. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Emily (contact info above) to schedule a date and time that works for you.
