Habitat Happenings | 2019 Year-End Edition
Hello from our Executive Director
Dear Friend of Habitat,

We are days away from the end of another year, and as many do around this time of year, we are reflecting on the accomplishments of our organization and the many volunteers, donors and community partnerships that we are thankful for in making these accomplishments possible.

As you read on, we hope you find yourself ingrained in our mission and as excited for 2020 as we are.

Warm wishes for a happy and healthy end to your 2019!

Sincerely,

Sarah Beckman
Executive Director

2019 In-Review
Home Buyer Program

In 2019, we partnered with three Sheboygan County families to help them achieve simple, decent and affordable housing through our Home Buyer Program. In additional to these three families who closed on their homes, we have actively been working with two others to prepare them for purchasing a home in 2020. A snapshot of each family we worked with in 2019 is included below.
Home Build #42
The Genske Family closed on their home in Sheboygan Falls on 2.14.19. This home was built ADA accessible to accommodate for the youngest child in the home who is in a wheel chair full time.
Home Build #43
This family closed on their home in Sheboygan on 4.30.19. Dad is active in the National Guard and the family is looking forward to adopting now that they have permanent space for their foster children.
Home Build #44
The Taylor Family closed on their home on 10.1.19 and is looking forward to spending their first Thanksgiving and Christmas in the home.
2020 Partner Family - Spring Faith Build
The Bernal Family was approved to finance, build and purchase a home through our Home Buyer Program in the summer of 2018. Their home construction will begin in spring 2020 and their home build will be classified as our Faith Build in partnership with Thrivent Financial and other area faith organizations. Megan, Joel and their two children cannot wait to own a home!
2020 Partner Family - Summer/Fall Build
The Vielbaum Family was approved to finance, build and purchase a home through our Home Buyer Program in November of 2019. We will begin construction on their home in 2020. Kitti and her two children are very excited!
Home Repair and Rock the Block Programs

In 2019, we worked with the Smith Family through our county-wide Home Repair Program to provide financing and contracting for a new roof, painting and other repair work on her home. This project was not able to be finished in 2019 so we will continue it as soon as weather allows in 2020. Through our Rock the Block Program, we completed 14 projects in a targeted neighborhood on Sheboygan's north side. We worked with nine homeowners in this neighborhood to provide affordable repairs on their homes. We completed five additional community projects in the neighborhoods - one for RCS Empowers, a local non-profit, and four neighborhood clean-up projects in alleyways and streets. A video recap of our 2019 Rock the Block event is included below.
Other 2019 Highlights and Accomplishments

  • Over 450 volunteers contributed 8,500 volunteer hours to help support our mission in the ReStore, our business office, on construction sites and at special events. If you are one of these volunteers, please accept our sincere appreciation for your support. You make our mission, including all of the work highlighted above, possible!

  • In September, our Board of Director's hosted an event called, "Affordable Housing in Sheboygan County: Do we need it? Does it exist?" Over 100 folks attended this event as we heard from representatives at United Way, the Sheboygan Housing Authority and Habitat for Humanity Lakeside. Following this event, we had front page news coverage in the Sheboygan Press highlighting the goals of our new strategic plan. Read the artible by clicking here.

  • Speaking of our strategic plan, our Board of Directors voted to adopt a new 5-year strategic plan in 2019. There are many details within the plan but the major goal is to increase our operational capacity so that we can provide more families in Sheboygan County with affordable housing solutions. Specifically, we are looking to engage 10,000 giving stakeholders (donors and volunteers) in our mission to serve 600 individuals with affordable housing solutions. This equates to 20 homes built and sold through our Home Buyer Program, 55 repairs financed and completed through our Home Repair Program and 200 repair or community-based projects financed and completed through our Rock the Block Program. Read more about our strategic plan here.

  • Throughout 2019, our Executive Director, Sarah Beckman, shared her expertise at several national and statewide Habitat conferences. She represented Habitat Lakeside at the Habitat for Humanity International Conference in Atlanta (March), a Habitat for Humanity International 3-part Webinar Series (September) and the Wisconsin Statewide Habitat Conference in Elkhart Lake (October). We are proud to have her leadership, Habitat and fundraising expertise to help fund and grow our mission locally and are even more proud to have her represent our local community at these Habitat conferences.

  • When our construction pick-up truck broke this summer in the midst of multiple projects going on, the community came together to help us out. Volunteers and Board members helped haul our trailers and materials where they needed to go while Van Horn Automotive Group and an anonymous donor from the Lakeshore Community Foundation quickly stepped up to help sponsor a new truck to get us mobile again. Thank you to everyone involved during this time! We are very excited to know we have reliable transportation and hauling capacity for the many job sites we will work at in 2020 and beyond.

  • In October this year, we learned that we are 1 of 5 Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Wisconsin to be awarded a Faith Build Challenge grant from Thrivent Financial for one of the homes we will build in 2020. Thrivent Financial will provide matching dollars for half the cost of a home (that's $65,000!). We will now need to call upon all faith-based organizations and churches to help raise the other half of the home and to sign-up to support efforts to build the home. More details on the challenge grant, including how to get involved can be found by following this link.

  • After a year of searching for funding, we received notification of a $110,000 capital improvement grant in late 2019. This grant will support necessary upgrades to our current facilities at 1911 N 8th St in Sheboygan. This includes funding for an LED light upgrade, a front entrance rebuild and window installation. These building improvements will help make our building more secure, cut our energy bills and ensure we have a place to grow our staffing in the years to come. Thank you to all of the volunteers who are helping with prep work for these projects!

Please Excuse our Mess During Renovations
Please excuse our mess during upcoming renovations. Our building is currently undergoing an LED lighting upgrade, installing a new front entrance off of our main parking lot entrance and installing windows along the 8th Street side of our building. Additionally, our business office that is located in the back of the store is currently expanding as we continue to grow. We anticipate being done with all of these projects by the end of February and hope to host a re-grand opening shortly after that. Until then, please be patient with our dust, some construction noise and moving entrances and check out areas.
