Never-Ending Circle of Love
True story. There is a senior named Joan who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Her three daughters, all of whom have elaborate names, visited her each evening as she underwent treatment.
Toylise fluffed her pillows and made her bed covers comfortable.
Deborah made sure she was taking the proper medications and had plenty of water near her bedside.
Jacqueline focused on meal planning and light house cleaning.
Inevitably, they all performed these tasks.
Everyone made sure the shopping was handled, she was driven to appointments, and her spirits were lifted.
Each daughter felt a special bond when it was their time to visit their mom. While they had always been a close-knit family, this extra special time together was particularly meaningful.
As time passed, by the grace of God, Joan healed. She regained her strength and independence.
But mother and daughters knew they would miss their one-on-one moments and the long conversations they had shared during Joan’s convalescence.
And so, they decided to officially commit to living with their mother one week at a time. One week, Deborah would live with Joan; then Jacqueline; and then Toylise. There would be a beginning to this arrangement but never an ending. No ending!
The cycle of laughter, conversation, cooking, bonding, sharing, and loving has become a never-ending circle of love.
As the winter of Joan’s life becomes a reality, she will never have to worry. Her family will be right there – sleeping just a few feet from her room, curled up on the couch watching mom playing with puzzles, listening to Gospel music…(the oldies), coloring or crafting. Truly, she wants for nothing.
This holiday season, I hope you will strive toward a life of unending love and happiness. Reach out to your parents, to the sibling with whom you’ve lost touch, or to the grandparent who sits alone in an empty home wishing someone would remember and love them.
Don’t text! Don’t call! Go visit!
Be like our Macomb Habitat ReStore Manager, Toylise, and her darling sisters - who will never leave their beloved mother…Not for a week. Not for a minute. Not ever!
The spirit of the living God lives in their hearts and sets an example for all of us. They are a beautiful, poignant representation of the meaning of the season and of the unending love sent to us by our own Father.
On behalf of our board and staff, Merry Christmas to all of you!
With every best wish,
Helen Hicks
