Blog: Celebrating Earth Month at Macomb Habitat in April... and always!
Whenever I think of Earth month, I think of all that our Habitat affiliate does to save the planet.

First, and foremost, I think about our ReStores which are wonderful places where many gently used treasures can be found. Folks who care about the Earth, choose to donate housewares, outside gardening equipment, furniture, and other wonderful items to Habitat.

Why? Because they do not want to see those items in landfills.
Home Run for Habitat Returns with a Matching Gift with Each Donation!
Thanks to Consumers Energy, this donation page will match your donation 1:2. That means for every $2 you donate to our affiliate, Consumers Energy will donate $1 to us up to $100,000! We thank them for their partnership and support.

Macomb County Habitat for Humanity is celebrating 25 years of bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. Help us reach our goal of raising $25,000 to help us celebrate 25 years.
Volunteer Opportunities Open Up with Warmer Weather
Join crews to help with projects at our Shelby ReStore on Saturdays, April 7, 14 and 21, starting at 9 am each day. The latter two will include construction of racks and storage shelves, plus organizing items in the store.Click on the Volunteer Hub button to sign up. May and June we'll see more Brush with Kindness projects and the start of work on a rehab project in Warren.

Each month we will need a small crew to help label mailings from our office at Baker College. Interested in a midweek daytime short stretch opportunity to lend a hand? Let Dave Tirsell know of your interest at dtirsell@macombhabitat.org , and we will inform you as those crews assemble.

Macomb Habitat Accepting Applications!
Home Repairs: A Brush With Kindness  is a Home Repair program for owner-occupied homes. Due to a series of grants provided by American House, BAE Systems, Shelby Community Foundation, Thrivent Financial and others, we are able to mobilize our volunteers to repair or replace a number of items that the homeowner would otherwise not be able to fix. Projects could include: handicap ramp installation, painting, trim work, porch/deck repairs, door/window replacement and more.

We are accepting applications for our exterior repair program! Are you age 62 or older? Have you or your spouse previously served in the armed forces? Do you live in Shelby Township? Have you recently received a violation notice for the exterior of your home? Are you low-income? Disabled? Elderly? If you answered YES to any of these questions, you may qualify for our A Brush With Kindness program! Click on the link for more information and the application.

Questions? Contact Dave Tirsell at 586.263.1540, ext. 102 or email dtirsell@macombhabitat.org
Homeowner Applications: Applications for Macomb Habitat's homeowner program are open! The houses available are primarily located in Warren, and we will have a couple options in Clinton Township mid-year. Seven homeowner partners will be selected from those that apply.

For a full list of criteria, click here for the Family Selection Criteria.
Note: Meeting the Family Selection Criteria enables you to submit an application to our program and in no way ensures your acceptance into our program.
If you meet ALL criteria, proceed with the Homeowner Application below.

ReStore News
Celebrate Earth Week with us!

Since Earth Day started in 1970, April 22 nd has been a time to reflect on the environment around us and how we impact it. When you donate to or shop at our ReStores, you are recycling items that otherwise would end up in our landfill. Tons of wood, household goods, furniture, fixtures, cabinets and other items find their way to affordable reuse each month.

It may be weeks early to plant your garden, but you can plan how to beautify your yard or how to lend a hand in public spaces this year. What could you do to protect our Great Lakes by conserving water, reducing fertilizer use and devising ways that roof and driveway runoff filters through soil instead of carrying water and pollutants directly into storm sewers?
Donation Hotline: (586) 263-1540
We offer FREE pick up for Macomb County residents!

Two ReStore locations:
46660 Van Dyke, Shelby Township
23211 Van Dyke, Warren

Volunteer Spotlight
Norm Jaworski , Rick Moroni and Randolph Porzondek are wonderful volunteers from IBEW Local 58, who are always there to donate their time, labor and materials when we need them! Recently, this crew installed all of the electrical supplies needed to light up a few storage rooms built in our Shelby Township ReStore. IBEW Local 58 is also wrapping up wiring the basement our Veteran Build house located in Clinton Township. Thank you to our friends at IBEW Local 58 for helping us when in need, and congratulations on being selected as our volunteers of the month!
April is National Volunteer Month!
Thanks to all of our volunteers who give a hand up to others in our community through Macomb Habitat! From office assistance to swinging a hammer, it is fitting that National Volunteer Month began in 1974, just two years before Habitat for Humanity International was started by Millard and Linda Fuller in southern Georgia. Habitat’s model worldwide combines the sweat equity (volunteer time) of homeowner applicants with the expertise of experienced construction personnel and volunteers from the community to build/rehab homes or do exterior repairs on homes. Volunteers make projects more affordable and help transform neighborhoods one day at a time.

Some volunteer facts:
  • Macomb Habitat mobilizes between 1000-1500 volunteers a year
  • Since 1989, the number of people who volunteer has increased by 60%
  • The Baby Boomers are 40% more likely to volunteer than the same age groups were in 1989
  • We see a strong interest among those in their 20’s and early 30’s in giving back to the community through volunteer activities
  • According to Deloitte, nearly two-thirds of Generation Y employees would like to use their business skills in their volunteer efforts
Habitat Summer Travel – First Deadline near
May 1 st is the deadline to be all signed up for the first of two Habitat teams to help in other nations. Dave Tirsell is leading teams of 12 volunteers each this year to Romania, June 15-23, and the Dominican Republic, Aug. 25-Sept. 2nd . Get inside another culture in a way that just being a tourist cannot. Fees for the trips (Romania - $845 for Thrivent members / $1345 for non-members; and DR - $1050/$1400) cover all land costs, but not airfare. A deposit of $350 holds your spot on the team, the rest due six weeks before the trip – May 1 st for Romania . Team members assist the local construction team to build the home, no experience necessary. Best for age 18 and up. Interested? Contact Dave at  dctirsell2102@yahoo.com  to express your interest and talk through your questions.

Macomb Habitat seeks spring cleaning furniture donations
Tuesday was the first day of spring and the start of the tax refund season. It is also around the end of winter that Macomb County Habitat for Humanity seeks donations of furniture and home goods for two of its ReStores.

“This is the time of year when folks start to sort through closets, basements and garages,” said Helen Hicks, president and CEO of Macomb Habitat. “If that is you, then please don’t toss those items. Give us a call and we will pick them up free of charge.”

Single mother living in her own home reminds luncheon guests Macomb Habitat needs help too!
Everyone who attended Macomb County Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Luncheon last week showed their support for the organization celebrating 25 years, just by being there.

Then April Chatman appealed to their hearts.

After the single mother with five children shared her story, guests were moved to pull out their check books and give a little more to the group struggling for donations.
