Blog: What Does Summer Mean To You?
As I look over my shoulder at the frigid mode of winter and the fickleness of spring – I am actually looking forward to the steaming days of summer and all that they mean to our Habitat.

Summer is build time. Our team, and hundreds of volunteers, will work on projects that range from new builds to homes that require significant exterior repair work.

Many volunteers are unsure of how they can help because they have never worked with tools or performed any serious home repairs.

But let me say this: I am a prime example of someone most likely to take a life with a hammer. So, if my team can teach me, they can teach you too!
Donate today and have your donations matched!
Help us reach our goal of $25,000 to help us celebrate 25 years!

Thanks to Consumers Energy, this donation page will match your donation 1:2. That means for every $2 you donate to our affiliate, Consumers Energy will donate an additional $1 to us! We thank them for their partnership and support.
Celebrate with our 150th Homeowner!
Join us for an open house on Thursday, June 14th at 42461 Orchard, Clinton Twp., 48036, to celebrate with Kelly Maisano and her family. Ceremony will begin at 3:45 p.m., with open house until 5 p.m. From house #1 in Mt. Clemens in 1994, this is the 150 th home built or rehabbed for decent, affordable housing through Macomb Habitat. We rejoice also for the thousands of volunteers who have partnered with us along the way, too.
Volunteer Opportunities
Many groups are joining us in June to help with home builds and Brush with Kindness efforts. We are opening up the July and August calendars. If you have a group of five or more interested in volunteering with us this summer, contact Dave Tirsell, Faith and Volunteer Relations Manager, at dtirsell@macombhabitat.org. Typically we work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Most projects have room for a few individuals, so you can go to the Volunteer page at macombhabitat.org, and see what is posted each week to add your name to a team.

  • We are recruiting a midweek team of 15+ to disassemble a ramp in Mt. Clemens for use on another home, and a Saturday team of 10 or so to use a scissor lift to paint the sign at the Shelby Township ReStore.
  • We are also seeking an experienced chain saw team to remove five trees in Clinton Twp. to clear the way for the installation of a privacy fence next to one of our homes.

The month of May was busy and exciting for Macomb Habitat! Three new families signed on their mortgage and became homeowners, several volunteer teams were put to work in our ReStores and on build sites, and our inaugural CEO Build event was a great success with 24 participants who installed siding on a home at Dakota High School. This was a month for the books!

Ready for a safe and meaningful adventure?
Travel to the Dominican Republic this August with Habitat!
Join the team soon for a Caribbean trip to build a decent, weather resistant home for a family in need. The week-long trip, Aug. 25 - Sept.2, will include cultural activities, assisting a local mason and Habitat team in the tasks that are needed to prepare a home. Good meals and comfortable lodging, transport and translation are part of the deal. The community is Construyendo Juntos (Building it Together) in San Juan de la Maguana.

This Thrivent Builds Worldwide trip is open to anyone 18 and over (17 if a parent is on the team), with costs of $1,050 for Thrivent benefit members, $1,400 for others, which includes a donation for materials for the home build. Airfare is extra. No experience necessary, just flexibility. Great way to use that Spanish if you have those skills. Questions? Contact Team Leader, Dave Tirsell, at: dtirsell@macombhabitat.org to get the process going.
