Proposed budget cuts would affect Habitat for Humanity nationwide... including locally in Macomb County

On May 23, 2017, the White House released its full fiscal year 2018 budget request which proposes to eliminate funding for programs that further Habitat for Humanity’s efforts both on a local level, and across the United States.

Proposed cuts include the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP), the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), the HOME Investment Partnership Program, and the Corporation for National and Community Service. These vital programs allow Habitat affiliates as well as other organizations locally and nationwide to empower more people to access opportunities for affordable homeownership and help provide the tools they need to build better lives for themselves and their families.

How will this impact us locally?

Macomb Habitat - Accepting Homeowner Applications for Veterans and Active Military Personnel

Macomb County Habitat for Humanity is looking for an active military personnel or a discharged/retired veteran in need of better housing!

Donor Spotlight
M&N Contracting donated one thing we needed most... a 16' box truck! From reading a story in the newspaper, to calling us with the donation, setting up a test drive and ultimately driving the truck off the lot, we are so grateful for this miracle! This box truck will be used for our deconstruction department. Our decon crew is hired to professionally break down kitchens and bathrooms, salvage the materials they can and sell them in our ReStores.

Thank you, M&N Contracting, for your generosity!
Attention Members of FreeStar Financial Credit Union!
Throughout the month of June, each of the four branches for FreeStar Financial Credit Union will be collecting donations for Macomb County Habitat for Humanity!

We encourage you to support them, because they support us!
Volunteer News
Yanfeng Automotive Interiors has four locations in southeast Michigan, the largest one in Harrison Township. Employees have been making payroll deductions over the past two years in support of Macomb Habitat, but the first volunteer team joined us in May to paint and renovate a home in Eastpointe.

Six different teams drawn from ten credit unions in the  Metro East Chapter of Credit Unions network helped us get the new Shelby Township ReStore ready to open and made progress on two new builds in Clinton Township and two rehabs in Eastpointe.

Several of the teams were able to put to work the new tools purchased with a Michigan Credit Unions Foundation grant that will continue to benefit other volunteers in the year ahead.
Volunteer of the Month

John Marini is a long time Warren resident who has been an advocate for Macomb Habitat for many years. His wide ranging work experience has provided him a number of skills that he has applied as we have prepared ReStore space in Mt. Clemens and Warren, most recently to the renovation of lighting systems for our Shelby Twp. ReStore. John is a great practical problem solver. He “works well with others” on the construction site, as a Board member, and is a most regular supporter of our various events, home dedications and fundraisers. He touches the lives of many through his church, Mt. Calvary Lutheran in Warren, through its food pantry and community garden. We are blessed to have John on our team!

Ted's Tip:  Time to clean the exterior of your home!

Just like washing your windows outside, the exterior of your home should also be cleaned. The cleaning can be done using a regular garden hose and mild detergent. Spray in sections from bottom to top!

Pressure washers can force water up and under your siding and cause mildew and rot, so beware! Spray at a downward angle to avoid this.

Ted is the Director of Construction at Macomb County Habitat. Use his tips and tricks around YOUR home to save yourself time and money!
