With a couple of weeks left in winter, sunny days and blooming flowers are ahead of us. As future Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay homeowners, my fiance and I are overjoyed that soon we will have a permanent home with adequate space for our growing boys. Currently we have been living in a one bedroom, where we share a common space with other family. Having our boys in a limited amount of space has been challenging especially during this pandemic, and we are looking forward to completing our sweat equity and moving in to our new forever home. It's exciting to be a part of the home building process, where we can really see the growth of each house and work side by side with other families like ours who are in need of housing assistance.
There's much more to be thankful for this past year. Habitat Monterey Bay completed the Los Esteros Court project, and we joined in welcoming the last two families into their homes. We are proud to be helping build the newest 11-home development, Rodeo Creek Court, which broke ground in August, 2020. And Habitat's Restores in Santa Cruz and Seaside are helping those affected by the CZU wildfires with a 75% discount, which has helped scores of families start to rebuild.
Lastly, for all other women like me who look for ways to give back, Habitat Monterey Bay has launched a Women Build campaign in honor and support of bringing awareness to women's roles at Habitat and all aspects of affordable housing. With support from Lowe's, many unique opportunities are open to participants, including virtually volunteering, peer to peer fundraising, and supporting our local businesses. Thank you for your support of our family, and Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay.

New Partnership with Wayland Properties
|
|
We are excited to announce our new partnership with Carmel-based real estate and property management firm Wayland Properties! Read more from them and check out their website on this partnership below:
"Wayland Properties are not only dedicated and working around the clock in bringing the highest quality real estate and property management services to our clients, we are committed to giving back to the community in which we live and work.
Housing and shelter are basic human needs, and it’s not something we take for granted. We share the goals of Habitat for Humanity, which is dedicated to bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay is an important and much-needed community-based organization that strives to make a positive impact on as many people as possible by helping to build decent, affordable homes and provide homeownership opportunities to qualified families who live and work in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. www.habitatmontereybay.org
But Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. Families purchase Habitat homes with a down payment, sweat equity, and an affordable mortgage. It relies on generous donations to keep the organization funded and operational. Every little bit has a real and lasting effect on the community.
With that in mind, Wayland Properties will give 3% of each real estate sale and 3% of profits from its property management division to Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay.
Additionally, Wayland Properties will donate 7% of EVERY real estate transaction they make to the 501 (c3) nonprofit organization of the seller/buyer’s choice.
Wayland Properties owners Ashley Wayland and her husband Nic Casas are passionate about the community and committed to social responsibility. Ashley has been part of the community since 2007, and Nic is a native, born and raised on the Monterey Peninsula, so they know that a strong community with a high quality of life means safer, healthier lives for everyone.
By supporting Habitat for Humanity, Wayland Properties can help build homes, build hope, and make a positive impact in the community."

International Women Build Week was built together by Lowe's stores and Habitat for Humanity International on a foundation of strength, resilience and perseverance.
A global event, International Women Build Week focuses on raising awareness of the challenges women face in accessing safe, affordable housing. This year, Lowe’s awarded grants to more than 300 Habitat for Humanity organizations in the United States, Canada and India to support their efforts in building and improving homes for women and their families.
Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity have a proud history of providing opportunities for women in construction and home improvement. And while there is no substitute for swinging a hammer, we are excited to host virtual activities and events during International Women Build Week.
A panel-style event on March 12 will highlight the challenges and opportunities women face through affordable housing. Featuring community leaders, Habitat homeowners, volunteers, and others, Habitat board member Kathy will lead a lively discussion on topics of affordable housing.
A peer-to-peer giving challenge is at the heart of the fundraising component, with a goal of $10,000 to support the construction of the new home of Kali Campbell, one of our recently selected homeowners for the Rodeo Creek Court project.
Last but not least, our virtual volunteer opportunity is a fun and unique way to experience volunteering at the job site from home! There is a weekly email profile from our sponsors and supporters, a virtual build walk through and "orientation" and a fun scavenger hunt with the opportunity to earn a Women Build T-shirt! You don't want to miss it this year. View more details and sign up at the button below.

"Yes Mike, I'll be there" is what Chuck always said to me when I asked him to volunteer an extra day, unless of course his wife had other plans! - Mike McIlwain, Habitat Construction Manager
We want to thank one of our long-term and dedicated regular volunteers, Chuck Barr. Chuck has been a volunteer with the regular "Golden Hammer Crew" for over six years. He will be moving out of state soon to be with family, and we want to take a moment to thank him for his support through the years. He helped build nine homes in the Los Esteros and Rodeo Creek Court developments. Thank you Chuck, you will be missed!
"We will definitely miss Chuck's dedication to this organization. Chuck volunteered three days a week. And in the past seven years he helped complete seven homes and three ADUs. We wish you the best of luck and thank you for all your help!" - Dylan Childs, Habitat Construction Foreman
