Connecting hearts, minds, and hands to meet needs in our community
"Faith Leaders Responding to Gun Violence" attracted almost 100 ministers, community leaders, and organizations, including UNITE INDY'S Jim Cotterill, left, to St. Lukes United Methodist Church to discuss how we could work together to reduce gun violence in our city. Fruitful table discussions were highlighted with knowledgeable speakers and a photo project on gun violence by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. UNITE INDY took part with committe d people of many faiths—united in responding to need.
UNITE INDY’s Partner of the Month is Stop the Violence Indianapolis. Led by Anthony Beverly, the organization was created to reduce gun violence, gang violence and domestic violence through personal interaction and introduction of positive alternative options. Armed with a business degree from Tennessee State, Beverly's purpose in life is helping inner city youth become men of God. We are so proud to know and work together with Anthony and Stop the Violence Indianapolis.
Finally! We have the permits in place for UNITE INDY's new office at 241 W. 38th Street. Pastor Eugene Potter of New Life Development Ministries, who trains those re-entering society in construction trades and whose folks are renovating the property, stands (left) with Jim Cotterill and Pastor Potter’s son, Eric, who owns his own construction firm, having been trained by dad. Work has begun in earnest. It’s a long road, but we are all benefitting from the lessons in patience that God is providing!
Going to work isn’t easy when you don’t have a car and because of that, unemployment in our poorest neighborhoods is soaring. Enter Rideshare, a program by Enterprise Leasing to put vans to work getting people to the jobs they want and need. For the unemployed, this is a God-send. For companies who need great employees, they gain a competitive advantage in recruiting, retention, and access to loyal employees. Rideshare operates in more than 70 U.S. cities and UNITE INDY is working to connect employers here to this valuable service, which may also make them eligible for government grants. How many of you have experienced a "God Thing" in your life? Those times when against all odds, events that shouldn't have gone your way, do. As the Bible says, we see life "through a glass darkly," not knowing the future. Well, a big God Thing occurred in Nancy's life recently--ok more like a hundred God Things that had her packing up all her stuff, and moving across town. (Yes, hubby too!) Sometimes when it seems too good to be true, it can only be God at work. Check out her blog here!
Don't be left out--We need you! S tand with us! Anyone can tell you: Not much gets done without money. For UNITE INDY to get a city-wide volunteer/need website going it takes great people with computer skills who work individually with churches, businesses, charities and others, so that each has its own portal to enter the world of need in our city.
We need a place to meet--working on that! We need to publish and insert the powerful testimonies and round table discussions that give suburban Indianapolis a much more personal understanding of the issues faced by our poor and hopeless. These are just a few of our needs, but any donation is so appreciated! And thanks to those who have helped so far! UNITE INDY is a 501(c)(3) public charity. So donations can be tax deductible.
