CUNY Callouts

Meet Cynthia Carvajal, CUNY’s interim director for Immigrant Student Success, who’s impacting the lives of many students. Her goals as a scholar at the intersection of immigration and education are grounded in her own 12-year experience as an undocumented immigrant and student. Cynthia came to CUNY in 2018, moving from Arizona to serve as the first manager of John Jay’s Immigrant Student Success Center, the first of its kind in New York State.

Why CUNY? “What brought me to CUNY is the potential to create sustainable resources for immigrant and undocumented students at CUNY,” she says. “I emphasize that CUNY students are brilliant and motivated to support themselves and their community, and it is up to CUNY staff to create and develop advocacy to uplift that energy.”

What she does for fun: “I am taking French classes and ice skating.”

What her day-to-day job looks like: “It is often a lot of emails, but also revisiting policy that is currently impacting undocumented students. This means finding a paper trail that can remove a barrier from a student's path toward their educational goals.”
