Haiti Partnership: Lunch and Much More

Every Sunday, in the Prayers of the People, we ask God to bless our partners at St. Augustin’s School in Maniche, Haiti. So, what’s up at St. Augustin’s as the school year nears its end? As we’ll mark with the annual Evening in the Caribbean party next Sunday, April 26, at 5 p.m. at HJ’s, there’s much to celebrate.
First, the miraculous basics: Your generous gifts via St. Andrew’s make it possible for about 450 kids in an isolated, rural area of southwest Haiti to have a shot at life beyond subsistence agriculture. The school serves kids in preschool through grade 12, helping equip the community’s future teachers, nurses, and businesspeople. St. Andrew’s provides the majority of the school’s funding, which comes from three sources: annual support from the Outreach Commission granting process (St. Augustin’s is one of our 14 Outreach partners and ministries); the fall Haiti Advent Card Sale, which funds teacher salaries; and the spring Evening in the Caribbean party, which funds the hot-lunch program for students, teachers, and staff. In addition, our Trinity Guild recently funded 100 kits of menstrual products for St. Augustin’s girls in middle- and high school, as well as bringing a nurse educator to visit the school. It matters because girls often stop their education if they can’t meet this basic need.
Years ago, St. Andrew’s could send parishioners to Haiti to keep our relationship with St. Augustin’s strong. Political violence and gang rule continue to make that impossible, and I grieve the loss of that great opportunity for true mission work – encountering and being changed by siblings in a very different context. But in other ways, the bond between St. Andrew’s and St. Augustin’s has grown. With What’s App and the cell service now available in the Haitian mountains, we can check in much more regularly with our parter priest. Technology opens other doors, too. Students in St. Augustin’s upper grades and St. Andrew’s youth are exchanging videos of daily life there and here. And our younger kids are helping make the décor for the upcoming party at HJ’s.
So, as parishioner and chief Haiti fan Kathy Shaffer puts it: We have parishioners from ages 3 to 93 helping to build this partnership and build opportunity for kids in Haiti. So, please come to the party next Sunday – both to cheer another year of great work and to “fund the lunch” for next school year.

I Will, With God’s Help (Thursdays, April 16–May 21, 6:00 p.m., HJ’s)
At every baptism, we renew our Baptismal Covenant. The words are familiar—but living them out is not always easy. In a divided world, the call to this covenant can feel difficult. We’ll gather to name those challenges honestly and explore how we might live into the covenant with greater clarity and intention.

HVAC Update: Air Conditioning Returns to Nave
This week, work was completed on replacing the large HVAC unit serving the nave (the worship space), which means we’ll have normal air conditioning there this Sunday morning. Looking to the week ahead, we’ve begun replacing the units serving the rest of the church’s ground level, and new units will be coming online over the next two weeks. So, if you walk from one room or hallway to another, you may experience a change in climate depending on which units are being replaced at that moment.

Volunteer at Our Brookside Farmers' Market Coffee Tent
St. Andrew's is once again hosting a coffee tent during the Brookside Farmers' Market 2026 outdoor season, held every Saturday morning from April 11 to October 31 at the HJs Community Center parking lot. Please join us as often as your schedule allows, whether once or twice during the season or as a regular volunteer. Enjoy coffee and conversation while building community with the market farmers, guests, and each other! We are looking for volunteers to serve coffee and start conversations in one of two shifts: 7:40 to 9:30 a.m. or 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. Two volunteers are needed per shift. Birthday Card Ministry
St. Andrew’s sends birthday cards to parishioners throughout the year as a simple way of staying connected within our parish community. We are looking for several volunteers to join our current team and help with this monthly ministry. Writers are scheduled by month, and cards may be written at church or taken home, whatever works best for you. All materials are provided.If interested, please contact Mtr. Ride Ministry at St. Andrew’s
Thanks to a generous estate gift from parishioner Tina Norton, we’re excited to launch a new Ride Ministry to help parishioners get to worship, church events, and even medical appointments. In partnership with Lyft, rides will be available at no cost to you.
To request a ride, simply email rides@standrewkc.org (or call the church office if email is a challenge) with your name, phone number, pickup location, destination, and times. You can also complete an online form here.
Mtr. Rita Kendagor and Brittany Conge will coordinate your ride and ensure you’re connected with a driver.

Jesus With You . . . at Home
If you're worshipping at home, you can pick up consecrated wafers to use during our celebrations of Holy Eucharist. They're available in a basket in the narthex, or from the office, anytime the church is open. If getting out is a challenge, we'll be happy to deliver wafers to you. Just contact Mary Sanders (by email or at 816-523-602, ext. 110) about arranging delivery.

Practicing the Presence of God Retreat
May 29–31, 2026 | Savior Pastoral Center (Kansas City, KS)
Join St. Andrew’s Contemplative Ministries Commission for a two-night guided silent retreat led by Rev. Canon Lisa Senuta, centered on the teachings of Brother Lawrence.
This retreat offers gentle guidance into silence, communal prayer, reflection, and spiritual direction—whether it’s your first silent retreat or a familiar practice. Come experience rest, community, and a deeper awareness of God’s presence in daily life.

An Evening of Entertainment at the Cabaret
The Parish Choir presents an evening of music from Broadway, Hollywood, and beyond in a lively cabaret setting. Inspired by the intimate wine cellars of 1800s France—where small groups of artists gathered for creative, impromptu performances—this event will feature selections from Spamalot, Oklahoma!, Wicked, The Prince of Egypt, West Side Story, and more. Invite family, friends, and neighbors to experience St. Andrew’s in a fun and welcoming way.
Wine, treats, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at each table. Individual seats are $30, or reserve a table for six for $150. Reservations are required.
Tickets and tables can be reserved by email at thomas@standrewkc.org. Payment may be made by credit card (on Sundays or at the door), check, or Venmo (@StAndrews-EpiscopalChurch). In all cases, please include “Cabaret Evening” in the memo.
Proceeds from the evening will support the choir’s annual spring dinner, travel fund (including a possible future tour), and related expenses.

Greeter Training
There will be a group training session at 9:15 on Sunday, May 3rd in the basement/undercroft for parishioners interested in serving as greeters before Sunday services.
This is the basic “job description”:
- Welcome attendees at the parking lot or information desk doors, 20 minutes before the service.
- Say hi/good morning, etc., and offer an invitation to make a nametag.
- Help visitors find locations, including the restrooms, coat racks, and the nursery/Sunday School classrooms.
- Mingle in the Jewell Room after the service, chatting with folks that no one else is talking to, especially if they are newcomers.
Some first-time visitors may have “checked us out” online prior to attending, so a warm, in-person greeting at the door is terrific!

The 20s and 30s are often a time of change and growth. In the midst of busy schedules and life transitions, this group gathers to build friendships, explore faith, and share life together through conversation, laughter, and service.

Weekly Discussion Group: Meets after the 10:15 a.m. service at HJ’s Community Center to reflect on the week’s Gospel reading and sermon.

Third Sunday Brunch: On the third Sunday of each month, the group gathers after the 10:15 a.m. service for brunch. Participants meet in the Jewell Room before heading to a nearby restaurant for an informal time of connection.

Game Nights & Social Events: Game Nights are held every other month on the fourth Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at HJ’s (next one in April). On alternating months, the group gathers for other social events at varying times and locations.

Service Opportunities: Members regularly volunteer with the Free Store ministries and participate in other service opportunities at church and in the wider community throughout the year.
